Quick question, do most Australians call their mother "Mom" or "Mum" and father "Dad," or other terms like "Ma" or "Pop?" I'm writing an article and wanted to get it right. Thanks.

Australians never say Mom, unless its a personal thing, in the way I call my parents Ma and Pa. When referring to them in the third person though they are referred to as my Mum and Dad.

I've never heard anyone, in person, on tv, on the radio, etc., call the female parents anything other than Mums. Dad on the other hand, is still Dad.

So to answer your question, if you use Mum and Dad in your article, no-one will complain.

So that blind people can hate them as well.

Agree with whateverpedia, I call my folks Mum and Dad, and that's what our children call us.

Mom and Pop are in some Irish dialects and they took it to the US (and Canada?) when they went enmasse in the 19th Century.

Rest of the English speaking world say Mum and Dad.

It raises an interesting question of how we ever got "Mum and Dad" out of "Mother and Father" in the first place? - - (even coming from "Mater and Pater" it seems lost...)
