I'd put a band aid over it and wait for it to grow out a bit.

and what do I do when it grows out? the left side that's white I can lift that up a little and tear it off if I wanted, but it'd probably hurt a lot and i'd rather not.

Trim the whole nail back as far as you can. Get a buffing stick and smooth the split to the good part. If you are very secure, a couple coats of clear nail polish will help keep the nail entact. When the polish dries, put a bandaid on. Change the bandaid often. Keep filing the nail short until it all grows out.

so pull it off all the way across? ugh that sounds painful, or do you mean just cut out the white part and keep filing the good part till they cut part grows to the good parts length? you see how far back this thing cut right, is almost half my freakin nail!

Just let it grow. . and don't pay too much attention to it. The more you pay attention to it the more you can feel the pain.

No, no, no. Don't rip it. Just trim it back as far as you comfortably can. The reason you want to trim and buff is eventually that lose section is going to catch on something and rip. And you want that to happen later rather than sooner.

I trim my nails to sithin about a 1/16" inch(about 1mm) of the end of the finger. Wen I say END, I mean in the middle. The other two sidees are often flush with the bed. Women may like them long, though I never figured out why!

Regardless, if you have an injury like this, the best thing is protect it and wait until it grows past the cut. If you are CAREFUL, you can trim it as it grows, to lessen the chance of recurrence, or buff the end so it won't catch and be a major problem, But you DON'T want to rip it out, or tear off much past perhaps 1/16" from the end. If you do, there can be pain, bleeding, possible infection, and it can grow back wrong.

And... after you get over this, might I suggest that YOU never trim your nails again.

Manicure every 2 weeks. Pedicure every other manicure.

Give it time.. gonna have to let it grow out. Put a bandaid on so you don't get it irritated.

I tripped recently and end up with a nail like yours. It was pretty painful after a day so I went to see a doc. He told me to cover it. Keep it dry and wait a few weeks to a month as it would start to heal itself. It did just that and I cut trim it slightly after a couple of weeks and it was sorted after about 7 weeks. So as many suggested. Don't cut it off and leave it whatever you do as you could end up with a nasty infection!

Place bandaid on it and let it grow. You could also try placing superglue over it.

MAYBE you think we are talking about #19. For #19, I would say go to the ER, get it cleaned up, and antibiotics ASAP, and MAYBE have it cut off if it deteriorates. NO, we are talking about #1 which is not NEARLY so bad. I have had things like #1 happen to me maybe 3 times and never even had to see a doctor.

        Nope.

Ouch! I used to do that all the time to my nails. Just cut off the main part that is hanging off, and leave the rest to grow back. Otherwise you can just put a band aid on it if that's easier.

Appreciate everyone's comments. Just wanted to let you guys know when I cut the nail off it was, very surprisingly not as deep as I thought, and I actually managed to have it cut across almost perfectly even, no blood, so hopefully it grows out fine.
