I am new to the site. Are there any CAD Techs, engineers or architects out there? Looking to make some friends.

    G'day, Matt.

I used to be a CAD drafter in a past life.

Hey Alex! I am trying to make it my "past life", too. LOL What is your area of specialty now? I take it you are "out of the game" altogether. Good for you. Do you work for yourself now in IM? Would love to hear some of y our story..if that's not too bold.

Thanks for responding. Oh...and your friend in this thread seems to be missing you a bit

Do you miss it? The good thing about CAD is that you can really zone out and doing some lengthy work, listening to your headphones and working almost without thinking (think : DATA PROCESSOR). The bad thing? See above! lol

    G'day, Matt.

I've been out of CAD for the best part of eleven years. Now a web developer/online marketing consultant...mainly a consultant trying to phase out the web development side.
Looking at getting more into the IM area by developing my own products and partnering with a few friends to brainstorm ideas and develop new products.

Sal, I've sent you a PM.

My family keeps telling me to do something in CAD for IM, but, for me, the thrill is gone. And there seem to be so many of these sites online already.....customized home plans, block libraries, lisp routines....it all bores me. So, here I am, going to start something new. Sounds like you are doing well!

I'd love to find some sort of new, never-before-thought-of-way to use CAD in IM. Have you ever done anything with it?

Considered doing the obvious...3D modelling, full interior rendering in CAD & 3D Max and that sort of thing, but never got around to it. I do miss it and will continue missing it...applied for a couple of contract jobs over the past 12 months and was told that I've been out of the game for too long. Go figure! They now want more than CAD as there are so many specialised packages for architecture, structural steel, auto, piping, civil, etc that unless you have skills in a few of those as well as basic CAD, they won't talk to you.

Solidworks , autocad, some cam & CNC stuff

    yep years ago now

Have you heard of webGL and webCL ?

Google just converted maps to webGL

Basically you can render full 3D in the browser without any plugins or downloading any application

webCL uses the graphics hardware to do parallel processing in the browser - this means a fully complex CAD app like solidworks or autocad could work fully from the browser and load just as a web page does.

This is the future 2-3 years from now - it all uses javascript in the HTML5 canvas but you can convert C & C++ code to javascript using a script called emscripten

I would love to create apps like CAD to run as thin client in the browser.

I remember when knowing CAD was "cool". And everyone thought you were a genius! I guess I'm showing my age. I had not heard of this new development of which you speak, but I can't say it surprises me much. I'm gonna look into it though to learn more.

I keep waiting for the hologram type of internet, where no computer or Internet device is required.

I did 3d architectural rendering/animation with 3dsmax in Sydney and London before getting into IM. I loved it but the hours were too long.
