Anymore with as fast as everything is, I think it's coming down to a preference of screen size, weight, operating system, and battery life.

Most new notebooks are fast enough to take on multiple tasks at once without a problem.

If anything, I would go with something that actually has a long battery life with the wifi turned on so you have the option of using it for hours without needed to plug in.

There might have been a time where you pigeon-holed yourself with the 'wrong choice' but now everything will do what you are asking.

Right now, I'm using a perfect one. It's an HP DV7-1240 US, which I picked up for a song at Circuit City ($675 after rebate, which is cheap).

It's got decent power, it's uber quiet (my last one had fans roaring at high speed when doing anything more intensive than visiting an html page), and the 17" screen isn't bad either. The only bad thing is the keyboard is nearly invisible unless you're in the perfect ergonomic position (that sound you hear is chiropractors and back surgeons rejoicing lol).

Only real thing I can tell you is to steer clear of any laptop with an Nvidia video chip inside. HP has several on recall due to manufacturing defects, and others may as well.

As far as what to get, it's all up to you. Intel has superior processors, but nasty video chips. AMD had weaker processors, but the ATi video chips (AMD owns ATi btw) literally rule. Either way, you'll get the same performance.

Macs are just too damned expensive, and you can emulate one on a PC if you really need the software. Plus Mac emulation on the PC is actually faster than the Mac itself (run them side by side and see for yourself), so why waste money on a Mac if you can do that for about $100?

      Floyd,

thank you. I personally prefer macs, but like you said, they ARE too expensive. I was looking at a g4 for $600 used. I was thinking about a dell, but once again, bad quality. I'll look into circuit city and see if I can find something decent to show presentations.

I am using Lenovo/IBM Thinkpad notebooks. I have had notebooks from many other brands before but none any close in terms of reliability and service. I am an extremely hard worker and I take my notebook out almost everyday and often work outdoors.

I think a key issue that must not be overlooked is the pointing device. Most notebooks nowadays use a touchpad that I cannot stand at all. Lenovo/IBM, Fujitsu few others have a trackpoint device that I swear by. I actually prefer this to using a mouse.

I am using a Lenovo X61 at the moment but the 12.1" screen is too small for some people. My dream notebook is the Lenovo X301 which has also been dubbed the "perfect notebook". However this will have to wait till my business improves.
