Oh my goodness - if you go on social media you lose privacy???

    Who would have thunk it?

Geeks will be geeks - and I won't miss Facebook anyway:p

  • They also said they were going to bring down FOX News...

I'm kind of looking forward to that...

O'Reilly said the funniest line I had heard all day just now...but I just caught the tail-end of it...

With standard effete aplomb, he said,

"We won't discuss that...that would be innuendo...we don't do that here..."

But they also threatened the Zeta cartel - maybe not a smart move for their kidnapped comrade...not exactly the folks to takes threats lightly...

Let's hope that one turns out in their favor - for his sake.

Apparently, Facebook was going to shut down on March 15th but since that didn't happen, Anonymous may have decided to take matters on their own hands:

I think they'd actually have an easier time taking down Facebook than Zeta. At least FB is their element -the web. Drug cartels don't operate from a website. The best way to stop them would be to legalize drugs.

Ok, so I don't get what the point of announcing these things are. Generally speaking, Anonymous brings down sites with DDOS attacks--among other things.

Thus, by announcing what their plans are they essentially warn the ENTIRE technical staff that on November 5th they need to have the resources at the ready to prevent and/or fight such an attack.

Seems to me that it would make a whole helluva more sense to actually bring the site down and THEN state who, what, and why.

    Just sayin.

Yeah really. And even if somehow they took down Facebook it would only go down "temporarily". It would be fixed and running back up in no time. I mean, how long could they actually make it last?

Unfortunately we couldn't get lucky enough for them to take it down permanently.

To get free press even if they aren't successful? Big egos there.

With Ddos, it could last conceivably for weeks, and come in waves. There are over 3 billion possible locations it could come from, and they are controlled from even more locations. It is difficult, but FAR from impossible! The SQL Slammer worm disabled some corporations for WEEKS!

Well, if they don't announce it ahead of time, it is less impressive, gets less coverage, and someone, or something, else could get credit.

HOW can they "have their resources at the ready"? You DO realize that such things are AUTO TUNING, right? Will they shut down ICMP? Well, every plac likely to do that did YEARS ago! Will they hire more staff? Get larger systems? Increase network size? Add redundancy? That could be EXPENSIVE and SLOW! will they block ports and IP addresses? WHICH ONES? There IS a reason why DDOS attacks STILL happen even though almost EVERYONE knows about them. The only way to REALLY protect against it would be to disconnect from the internet, which would accomplish the same thing.

I'm 100% sure this isn't going to happen. They can try to bring Facebook down but they won't succeed.

Couldn't they have been a bit more creative than a "?" for the headless guy's head? The opening music was dramatic, but that robotic voice and the icon shown were sort of a let down. Maybe they need a marketer?

Well, one more reason for me to put off joining Facebook till I see if it gets taken down and not worth the effort to sign up.

For some reason, I INSTANTLY mused about something that is VERY possible! WHY if the voice generated by such programs had a tremor or subliminal element that indicated nfo about the sender, like computer name, setup info, IP/date, language location settings, etc...? The FBI could then track it.

Those elements would have to be there 1) and 2) they are probably using VPS and proxies to upload it...

Whew. I'm glad I don't use Facebook for personal reasons lol. I've never thought kindly of it in that manner and I agree that it's a storage of information that shouldn't be in the hands of some random dude. Not to say I'm against Facebook entirely, I'd like to see where this goes.

But just as a thought. If they announced Nov. 5th.. who's to say it won't happen earlier/later? Maybe it's a tactic to get certain companies scrambling while they focus on other things?

Justin is right about the distraction part. Also, maybe they WANT facebook to harden their systems. That could distract THEM, waste money/time, etc....

I'd like to see Facebook closed down simply because I don't like it. I don't like the name, I don't like the look of it....you name it.

I'm not sure I want it brought down by a couple of kids who have watched Hackers too many times though...

The Guy Fawkes mask is becoming "old hat" too if you'll forgive a pun...

Facebook hacks have been reported for 2 days now and there is a fear at Facebook (reportedly) that it may be more widespread than first thought.

Many are saying this doesn't look like Anonymous - if it is they've gone to a new low with this kind of crap.
