Yet again, last week I was having a conversation with a fellow warrior about the massive number of venomous animals here in Australia.... today - more proof -

Mum dead within hours of snake bite

The 42-year-old Queensland nurse died after being bitten by a snake, reportedly while at home gardening, on Wednesday.

An ambulance was called to the family property at Wheatvale, 16km west of Warwick, at 4.50pm. Ms Pails was treated at the scene and was later transported to Warwick Hospital, where she worked, in a critical condition. Staff treated her with antivenom but she died at 7.05pm.

In Canada, apart from rattlesnakes in some regions and the occasional black widow spider hidden in grapes imported from California, the most dangerous things in nature are huge and easily seen, eg grizzly bears. I'm definitely more scared of those toxic little things in tropical countries that aren't so easily seen such as snakes and spiders.

Not nice, my brother has just arrived home from 18 months in Oz and I think he only encountered a few spiders that were swiftly dealt with!

I hate snakes. Honestly. But it's funny how as a kid I used to grab them with my hands and take them to my school.

But you know what Paul? You folks living down under are always playing in dangerous waters: snakes, spiders, sharks...!!!!

Better keep a dog to warn you if there is a snake around.

Apparently she died so quickly because the venom was injected straight into a blood vessel, so it spread very quickly. We often go trail running with our dogs around the Glasshouse Mountains and there are brown snakes and some red bellied black snakes there. In March we went to New Zealand for a run - no snakes, no ticks, no nasty spiders - I want to move!

I'm glad when I go rock and gem hunting that I only have to deal with rattlesnakes and scorpions, both vile as heck but rarely deadly. There are more deadly snakes in the South - but I don't live there, lol. I can't imagine how exacting someone has to be to go gem hunting in Australia.

Well, we *do have* the infamous "drop-bear"... but because they fall on your from out the trees, it's still pretty hard to see them coming

Sal, if you go outback you'l' also have the amazing Taipan to deal with - it has most most toxic venom of any land snake worldwide.

Personally I'm not scared of snakes, have picked up quite a few in my time, but that one scares the **** out of me.

I read somewhere once that 7 of the worlds most deadly top ten snakes live in Australia... who's coming for a holiday?

I read Bill Bryson's " A Sunburned Country". Had a friend relocate to Australia permanently many years ago and was always fascinated.

It's a fascinating travel book but reinforced my impression that wildlife I don't want personal experience with is abundant in Aussieland.

I was reading about that in the paper this morning. We live in the bush, have been here for about 14 years, and have seen maybe half a dozen snakes if that. A couple of whip snakes, carpet pythons and the occasional eastern brown.
We have a pet spotted python, as well.
Poor lady was very unlucky to die from snake bite, many more people are bitten and survive. Our friend's daughter who is 6 was bitten about 18 months ago by a taipan, she was rushed to hospital, where they found it was a 'dry bite', no venom was injected, snakes will sometimes do this as a warning.
    Sad news....

I heard that Australia had all of the world's venomous snakes.

Kurt - my dad was stationed in India during WWII and they kept mongooses around. He had pics of them. They are adorable animals.
