Help! Laptop battery loses all energy within 1 minute

Looks like the battery either failed suddenly OR it needs recalibrating. Consult your user manuals for this or do a search on the manufacturer's support forum.

I had the same issue with my previous laptop, the battery would die in minutes after I unplugged it. Then one day I tried turning the laptop on and it was completely dead. Ended up being that the motherboard crashed and I needed to replace it. So, i'm gonna go out on a limb and say that isn't a very good sign and that you might get the same result as me. What kind of a laptop is it? Mine was an HP.

The battery may need to be replaced if it is no longer holding a charge for long.

It is most likely the battery issue. Get a new one and it will be fine.

I've seen that a lot, I've owned several notebooks and have had it happen. As other have said your battery is going dead.

Another very common problem is that the machine will only work on AC with the battery removed - two of my Dell's and an Acer exhibited that when the battery finally went completely dead.

I'd suggest eBay for a new battery, if you haven't looked into it yet you may be shocked at the price!

I would check the power settings. You may have it on High Performance setting, which drains the mess out of the battery.

that happened to me last month. I realized my battery was a couple of years old, so I got a new battery. All fixed.

You might just need a new battery, or it might be a bigger problem, as others have stated. Do yourself a favor & invest in a Mac as soon as you can.. you won't run into that problem.

No "might" about. The tech term is "Low SoC" Basically the battery has outlived its useful life and needs to be replaced.

Please dispose of the old battery responsibly.

FORGET the idea of "recalibrating"! They have a way to detect APPROXIMATELY how much power may be there, and this refers to setting things up so it REPORTS as expected.

FORGET the powersettings! I have NEVER heard of ANY CPU, especially not an intel compatible one, that even CAN vary that much! I guess you COULD have a floodlamp that can be disabled, but WHY?

Why don't we explore the first 3 ways that WILL cause this to happen. OK? READY? LET'S GO:

1. What type of battery do you have? If it is NiMh, and you try to always keep it charged, or never completely drained it, it could be practically COMPLETELY dead!
2. If it is Lithium(basically lithium is in the name), it may die in a few years.
3. If it is anything else, it is probably dead.

So basically...What type? How old? How did you start use, and keep it charged?

BTW batteries CAN just up and die. It may also be installed wrong. Your plug in transformer can be bad(They MUST provide over a certain level of power. There IS a point at which your laptop will work, but not charge.). The batteries contacts can be dirty. Charging overnight with the laptop off would probably charge the battery BETTER than it would in an hour or two if the power level or contacts were an issue.

OH, if you keep some peripherals, like EVDO, on or plugged in, it can ALSO drain. AGAIN, 1minute would be WAY beyond spec, so I doubt it! They CAN cut your time down to a quarter though, so mayb 4 hours down to 1 HOUR.

For sure its with the battery, just have it replaced and everything will be fine.

Try to replace your battery. It could be an issue with your battery not able to hold a charge anymore.

You most likely need a new battery.

A word of advice on keeping your battery healthy:
The battery is like a muscle. It needs to be drained and charged fully. Do not run your laptop plugged into a power source if your battery is already at 100%. This is bad for it. Let the battery run all the way down close to 0% often and charge it back up to 100% and repeat.

Have you tried a new "Faraday" laptop battery? - you just need to shake your laptop violently like a shakeweight for a few minutes each hour to keep it running... (:rolleyes: jk)

Calibration used to be a problem with over cooking a battery, but I think that has all beeen covered. I don't think a battery will re-calibrate like it used to...

Your battery is fried, overcooked...in permanent sleep mode...gone to ray-o-vac heaven...now a never-ready...

You might check the voltage and test...or if it is an HP/compac laptop, they were having battery problems...and if your number is on the list - they might still replace it. If so, check their website for the recall list.
