Rant Bad Boss - Financial Crisis

I have a bit of a rant to do, seems like the right place for it here.

I had a pretty good job, working in metal fabrication. I was doing drafting, and project management/scheduling. The owner of the company would be better suited to running a sweat shop or something. He would daily verbally bash his staff. Being in the office, I had to listen to this regularly. I have never never heard someone treat and talk to his staff this way before. He was attacking me, calling me down, accusing me of not doing my job, not working hard enough (I was working 50-60 hours a week). I let the verbal abuse slide as much as possible. I would go home at the end of the day and my wife could see the pain in my face from listening to him. I am a type of person that holds strong values, is highly opposed to classifying people and strongly feels that EVERYONE deserves to be treated with respect. Listening to my co workers getting verbally abused every day, getting verbally abused myself, was hard to deal with. I had thought I would stay with the job until I could find a good employer. I have quite smoking, a goal I wanted to achieve before my 3rd child was born. Consequently I was edgy for about a week. When the boss started bashing my co workers by email, I got mad and fired some words back. Basically the truth, your an A$% and half the workers want to find another job because of his treatment of his workers. He had set me up to fail basically because he wanted me to help change his company, to help them grow. Part of this rant I sent to him said that if he would treat people better that he might have a chance of improving the poor attitude that exists there and consequently reduce his turnover, which would help to improve his business. He was soooo mad at me, he fired me a day before my baby was born. So now, we have no income, a brand new baby at home and a looming mortgage.....I know loads of families are struggling these days, so we are not alone. It just really bothers me, it seems the world is set up for bad people. This is not the first time I have been burned by someone. It seems like these people continue to get ahead in life and 'nice guys' like me get stepped on. It really sucks! I just want to care for my family and I want to be able to have these values and not be knocked down, because I am too nice.

On the side, I have been doing Internet Marketing for a number of years. I have made a bit here and a bit there, but nothing significant. Right now, I need so badly to inject a few thousand into our finances, so we don't lose our home. Can anyone share a method, that really works, that can accomplish this?

Feels better to get this out!

Well, if it akes you feel any better, it sounds like he went TOO far. Some people, that are like that, eventually end up being VERY bad off.

The fact that he was SO quick to fire YOU indicates he might not do well for much longer.

I wish you the best of luck!

BTW an educated employee is FAR harder to replace than many realize. If enough people leave, it will hinder his ability to hire new ones AND if he tries, he might find the ramp up takes too long to keep things going. Of course, that becomes more true as the company get larger. If it is only a few people, he can try beig nicer while he gets them to do things as he wants and needs.

You can always sue him for unlawful termination. I have done that and won my case.

Laurence - there are states in the US called "Right to Work" (which was a sham that was pulled over on people in a disgraceful way). It allows a company to fire you at will with no cause whatsoever. While they say that it's still illegal to fire for discrimination (sex, age, religion, race, etc) it's very difficult to prove it when they don't have to give any reason whatsoever for getting rid of you.

Anyway - that law has allowed abuse in the workplace that you wouldn't believe - including overtime til people literally drop. You know what happens if you get sick? Some companies just fire you for it.

I am completely furious over working conditions in these states right now (mostly in the west, I believe). It's like getting in your car at home in the US and getting out of the car at work in China or S. Africa or something.

I've been in need of more cash so I just picked up a Christmas job at a well known large company, which I'm not going to reveal just yet - but if I get fired, or after they get rid of us temp workers after Christmas - I'm telling everyone who they are and people will be shocked and angry.

This company is about to put people on mandatory overtime for the season - 11.5 hours a day 5 days a week. That might be understandable during a month for the Christmas rush. What sucks very badly is the amount of work they expect from people. If you aren't working at breakneck speeds all day then you aren't making your quota. People are hurting. The people upstream from your job are so pressed on their quotas that they are careless and are slowing anyone downstream from them so the people downstream are in jeopardy............

Firing during this season? If you are late. If you get sick. If you miss a day for any reason. Okay - miss a day for any reason? There were fires the day before yesterday in a nearby town. People were being evac'd - if that was you and you didn't make it to work, you don't have a job today. It hasn't snowed yet. If you have a snow emergency, though, this season and your road is closed due to a heavy snow -- you don't have a job.

To get into this place, I was hired to start on nights the 2nd. I went in, they sent me home because they didn't have paperwork complete. I went back to the temp agency to reschedule, they scheduled me for days starting the 13th. I went home changed my sleeping hours around. I got a call on the 8th that I missed my first day. I went back in to find out what that was all about. Oops, they just rescheduled me because THEY got THEIR work done. So they rescheduled me for nights the 15th. I went home and changed my sleeping hours around. I was supposed to be at orientation at 1:00 on the 15. On the 14th I got a call "we'll see you at 9:00am tomorrow".

So I messed my sleep hours up again, and went in after 3 weeks of being juggled, so now I'm beat before I even start and have no clue of what hours I'm working, am told if I miss work for any reason, I'm done and see a lot of people being put out the door every day for everything from car problems to fire evacuation. Some are just quitting because the job requires speed enough that it is physically hurting them.

Right now they are 500 workers short. They are offering $10 bucks the first day cash so people can afford to get to work - they are offering a $40 bonus for working period. Too bad they've been so abusive over the last however many years that people are just starting to catch on and refusing to work for them.

Just imagine how abusive and disorganized a company has to get to not be able to get 500 workers for Christmas during a time that almost a third of the people in the area are unemployed.

Greed kills neurons - and when people are becoming numb to hardships, they no longer have the attitude that they will put up with anything even for awhile to get that needed cash in the door. There's no "entitlement" to it -- it's just "no, I'm not letting you abuse me anymore".

It's going to be interesting to watch how far this company will go. They've already crossed the line whether they realize it or not. One out of three people I talk to (yes, I'm keeping track) openly say they will never come back there again. How many years has that gone on already, and where do they think they are going to get an endless supply of human power?

There is NO way to prove discrimination ANYWAY! And they usually DON'T! On 60 minutes, they showed a company owned by JEWISH holocaust survivors, it was about half black and half mexican! A black was turned down for employment, and they LOST a suit! COME ON!

Anyway - that law has allowed abuse in the workplace that you wouldn't believe - including overtime til people literally drop. You know what happens if you get sick? Some companies just fire you for it.
In the late 70s, they passed LOTS of rules regarding employment, time off, and overtime. STILL, GOOD LUCK! You have to pursue it in the courts. I had a case, but didn't pursue it because of time, money, and my employment history. There are LOTS of rules about hiring and firing, and revealing info about past workers, but they STILL do it!

Tell me about it! The sad part is that it seems the US works on two extremes. It would be nice if it were RIGHT DOWN THE MIDDLE!

A couple weeks ago, there was a MAJOR fire near this area. It not only affected the employees THERE, but probably HUNDREDS of others elsewhere.

WOW! I'm having the SAME sort of thing! 2 weeks ago, I was supposed to work at a maor company for 2 weeks. JUST before I get there, my employer said I was to work THERE 4 days, work another place(2 states away, that I was t DRIVE 3+ hours to), for 4 days(friday-monday inclusive), and then work at the first place for 4 days! Just the drive was NERVE RACKING! THAT could be a chapter in a book!

Right now they are 500 workers short. They are offering $10 bucks the first day cash so people can afford to get to work - they are offering a $40 bonus for working period. I wish I could say that is unusual. TODAY, it is the NORM!

Greed kills neurons - and when people are becoming numb to hardships, they no longer have the attitude that they will put up with anything even for awhile to get that needed cash in the door. There's no "entitlement" to it -- it's just "no, I'm not letting you abuse me anymore".

One nice thing about low wage jobs is that they are a dime a dozen. People are more willing and able to quit. Then again, at $10/hour, I think they ARE still paying over a 25% premium. You are right though. GOOD People WILL take a cut in pay to get decent protected time off on THEIR terms, and respect.

Sucks what's been happening, but that's the way the economy is in general. The good news is that you can *eventually* get to the point of making that much online, but it's not an instant thing. Not to toot my own horn, but the book in sig is actually useful for helping you to build up your business. It has lots of advice on building your Internet based business...

There is speculation they have exhausted their labor pool. There are only so many people with the skills needed in this small region. They have gone through so many people, they don't have many new applicants. What he has done to me and other people is bordering on criminal, he is being taken to labor relations from a previous employee of his. He is from South Africa, perhaps that is were he has learned this management style. It is quite sad that thing have gone this way, we are losing the freedom and rights we used to be envied for. All in the name of greed.....very sad

I thought about it. I think he let me go just before I crossed the 3 month probation period, so he doesn't need just cause. I suspect this was considered and a factor in letting me go.

It seems he is going to run his business into the ground and bury himself in litigation, not really wanting to get involved in that...

I just wish basic human rights and respect were becoming more mainstream, not less....

For clarification, by EDUCATED, I meant in a way that you can only learn ONE PLACE! ******THERE******! Let's say it were MCDONALDS! Of all places, MCDONALDS! I don't care if they have a 300 IQ, and went to every universty on the planet!

        1. What is their WHOLE job?
        2. Who is responsible for the things they need?
        3. What are the log ins?
        4. What is the opening and closing procedure?
        5. If they have to cook, what are the policies and recipes they may need?
        6... Etc........

HELL, I have been where I am now for MONTHS! I asked them for several things they won't bother with, etc.... Even some people there for over a YEAR, even the MANAGERS, don't know a lot of what they need!

They ALSO have two employees that are THE experts on two systems. If they die tomorrow?.....? Well, they will lose things that could take a YEAR to replace to that level!
And that is a HUGE corporation with HUNDREDS of THOUSANDS of employees!

So HOW do companies handle it? At mcdonalds and similar places, they lower their expectations, and have them shadow a person. THEN they SWITCH, and the other shadows them, to make sure everything is done right. In cases like mine, if they care to tell me, they assign individual passwords, and send them, or have another log in, etc.... And this is one reason why, in the US, it is customary to give two weeks notice. So you can bring your replacement up to speed.

Now THINK about this a second! In the example of mcdonalds, efficiency drops as the ration of new employees to old increases. You don't want a new person to pick the wrong item, and cause you to lose money, or not close properly and cheat the next worker, or use the wrong chemical to clean something, etc.... In MY case, you wouldn't want a person releasing sensitive information, not handling locks correctly, using the wrong environment, etc.... You want the ratio of new hires to DROP, so efficiency goes UP! THAT means doing something to KEEP old employees.

Exactly! It has taken the three months to learn everything about the company. To invest that time into training and then fire when their feelings get hurt. It is stupid, I was so on top of the drafting and the processes. My actual job duty was never specified, they had grand aspirations of me doing all sorts of things, but I couldn't do anything without their approval, which was difficult to get. Ah well, guess what I am seeing here is I'm not the only one, I kind of figured as much. It is too bad, seems to me it is good for a company to have a good relationship with staff, but I guess they don't think so.

Shadowing the fact that this type of treatment of people is just wrong, is the reality that we NEED money, our mortgage has no buffer, the kids need to eat, they need clothes. Its scary! I have made some money online, and it seems there are those on WF that claim to pull in big $$ in short periods of time. Been working at various things trying to see if I can figure something out. If I could infuse about 3 grand into my existence, then we will buy a month of time and i can get a job by then. Of maybe if I can keep it going, I can just stay home with my wife and help care for our babies. I don't want a fish, I want to learn to fish!

That's ANOTHER thing! I have a cousin who at least WAS a used car dealer. You know what his biggest asset is? RELATIONSHIPS and a CONTACT LIST! All he generally does is figure out what he has, tries to make the most profitable fit of people to products, convince the people that it is right, and get his company to finance. That is IT! Sounds SIMPLE, RIGHT!?!?!? Most little kids understand the concept, methods, etc.... SIMPLE!

But if he leaves, most of those relationships go WITH him, and many of the customers and contacts do ALSO!

When I said shadowing, I was using the term most of them do. HECK, on my current assignment I have been part admin, part problem solver, part developer, and part consultant. The company that I was contracting for had a new hire shadow ME, so HE could learn! The customer also did the SAME.

It comes down to respectful treatment, compassion. It baffles me that some of these employers don't seem to get that. They have families, kids, a heart? How can they put a father out the door at the start of the winter slow season knowing the chances of that person finding something is bleak? Especially when they have lots of work and that person has been trained to do it. How do these people sleep at night? Why do these people keep getting ahead in life? It just ain't fair! Karma will catch up with these people? It seems some of the 'old' sayings are correct "Its a dog eat dog world", "Nice Guys finish last".

I have tried numerous things online. I have tried IM niche and a few others, I have learned to build websites, links, seo, content, network, etc. I have made some money, but so far nothing consistent or substantial enough to really pay the bills. Currently I am thinking I might have to leave the family and head north to work in the Alberta Oil Sand, lot of people doing that right now.

Revelation: Life Ain't Fair. Never has been - never will be.

However, you need to accept your part in this. You cussed out your boss and apparently told him exactly what you thought. I sympathize and understand why you did it - but it wasn't the wisest thing to do.

You don't say how long you had the job but you do say you were looking for another job. You've been doing IM for a while with non-stellar results and expecting IM to support your family right now because you need it isn't realistic.

If there is work you can do offline I think that's what you should do even if it means moving or a long commute. At the same time use every spare moment to build an online business so you can live the way you want. When your family's financial survival is at stake you do what you have to do.

Employers can be demanding, rude, etc - but in a market with more than 9% unemployment the reality is there's always someone else eager to take the job you hate. That's how it is today whether we like it or not.

I will be taking notes over the next few weeks though and will be sending a report to legislators, OSHA, and the labor board when I'm done.
If you start a job with that attitude toward the employer, it won't end well:rolleyes: If you expect the worst - it will find you at any job.

Dear April: I don't want any trouble from you.
January was long, February was iffy, March was a freaking dumpster fire.
So sit down, be quiet, and don't touch anything.

Sal, I don't blame you for being upset, and I think it is terrible to treat workers the way some of them are treated today, but it wouldn't be any better if it wasn't a Right To Work State.

If the companies had to hire the number of people they need to do the job and pay them a good wage they couldn't compete with companies from other countries, so there wouldn't be any jobs at the company, because the company would be out of business.

We have a very big problem here in the U.S. and I don't see a way out of it right now. I think it is going to get worse, before things turn around. I do hope you can make it through that job Sal, even though you are not being treated like you should be.

      Good Luck

Actually, I don't think it's going to get much worse before it starts to get better. I've been researching and the problems are becoming so rampant that gov agencies are starting to wake up. And so what if a major company crashes and burns? If we went back to smaller companies again everything would stabilize. The large corps have become so greedy and abusive that they are starting to slit their own throats.

I don't care if I get put out the door again in a few weeks - I only needed a 4 week booster. I'm on my own and the economy takes some heavy swings at me sometimes, so I just grab something and if it doesn't last, well....good, lol. I will be taking notes over the next few weeks though and will be sending a report to legislators, OSHA, and the labor board when I'm done. When you see an employee puke in a trash barrel instead of going to his supervisor to report being sick in fear of losing a job, that's all she wrote in my book. I climb mountains for fun and they managed to make me hurt. The company is already in a lawsuit over pay violations in another portion of the state. I'm going to ride with it for awhile and find out as much as I can - then I will just walk when they make life miserable enough for me. There's only so much crap I take from anyone.

Laws are STILL on the books....Very OLD laws..... that make it ILLEGAL to be "too big to fail"! It USED to be that really EVERYONE had a competitor. Heck, one company made kerosene, became very big, and became the biggest, and perhaps the ONLY producer of gas on the planet! The government stepped in and split them up! Most of the siblings are still around. One is now the biggest on the planet, or at least the US, last I heard. It is a little company called Exxon! But at least they DO have viable competitors! Today, some are trying to buy up others and, if they succeed, they will simply undo the breakup. The SAME thing happened and is happening with AT&T!

Well, there are a LOT of reasons for not calling in sick, but your last post sounded VERY bad for the company. As for sick days, that is one of my pet peeves. If people didn't have to do things like go to work when they are sick, diseases may have disappeared LONG ago. It is possible that a "manager" could actually die because of a disase created by one he or she let spread a decade ago!
