I just came across an article on the IE8 browser that is soon to be in beta release.

It has a very interesting feature commonly known as 'porn mode'. Here's a writeup on it:

Rather than creating a browser with 'porn mode', wouldn't it be better for the private citizen if Microscoff simply created a keystroke shortcut that would immediately and permanently erase the entire browsing history from the hard drive, the point being to make it absolutely impossible for even the most hardcore hacker to bring up the browsing history from the hard drive?

Sure, it might damage the hard drive irreparably, but replacing a hard drive is a lot less costly than defending yourself against a lawsuit brought by the government against you because of the sites they caught you visiting after confiscating your computer on some trumped up charge.

I mean, you could be branded a terrorist for just looking at an Islamic website, one you may have found while just screwing around online out of boredom.

I think that would serve those of us who visit the 'birthday planning' sites much better than a browser blinder.

And isn't it a shame that we can be accused of crimes simply for visiting legal websites?

I'd say I have nothing to hide, but I'm afraid the government wouldn't see it that way. If they deem it necessary, they'd have no trouble concocting a case against me no matter the extent of my innocence.

Just take this forum for instance. Just because I visit here means I have some connection to those who post articles that advocate against government interests, although the poster was not the one who wrote the article.

I am guilty by association, no matter my actual innocence. And freedom of speech is a right that is being constantly undermined by the U.S. government.

Used to be we were innocent until proven guilty in America, but that, too has been turned around by our own government to be used against us. Now we must have lawyers to prove our innocence.

And by the way, anyone caught employing so-called "porn mode" will have a helluva a time defending their innocence in court.
You wouldn't need to damage a hard drive to accomplish this.

Erasure of your hard drive only targets fat tables, and directories. The data is still there on the hard drive, all a hacker has to do is read the actual physical sectors (which there are utilities that can do this very easily).

What you need to do is wipe out the physical sectors themselves by overwriting them with zero's. In fact, I used to remember such a program by Norton called 'Wipeinfo' which would do this for you. I haven't seen that utility in years, wonder if it's still being sold?

Thanks Indy - will need to look into that one. It gets a bit sick when we have to go to such lengths to be able to browse at will without having to fear prosecution.

Well what will the wives do who want to beat their husbands up for looking at porn?!?!

Oh and this police state we live in which will probably get worse is just awful. It's completely against democracy. Whatever happened to freedom? I can see people going to an Islamic website out of curiosity or whatever and BOOM next thing you know these scary looking men are at your door....
