Poem about our Australian summer

Extremely touching and thought provoking!!

I found this beautiful Aussie Summer poem and thought it might be a comfort to you. It was to me and it's very well written; I hope you enjoy it because it's the best piece of English literature I've seen in quite a while....

'An Aussie Summer '
a poem by Abigail Elizabeth McIntyre

Shit,

It's HOT !

I know how she feels. Truly poetic - captures the real spirit of summer.

It's also more concise than Dorothea Mackellar's effort, "I Love A Sunburnt Country" ('My Country').

Well, that sums it up exactly. It's been hotter than hell here today. 43 degrees celsius (109F) and it is supposed to be 44 degrees tomorrow. All I can say is, thank God for the air conditioner.

I work in a pub Grumpy and they all come in the morning and just sit there to beat the heat. We give them soft drinks or coffee etc when they want them.

After all they have done for my generation (48yo) and my kids it is a drop in the ocean to what they deserve.

I can't remember the last time we had so many 40+ days in a row here in Melbourne.

But don't worry, as usual there will be a cool change. Apparently it will be 35 on Saturday and 31 on Sunday.

I never thought I would ever be looking forward to a mere 35 degrees...

Actually it's nice and cool here in the tropics in Cairns where it's been cloudy and raining.

      Beautiful weather for summer.

Also right near the beach to cool off if it gets too hot.

Apparently it ended up hitting 45.7C (114.3F) here in SA yesterday afternoon and they're forecasting 45C again for today .

...at 6am this morning (half an hour ago) it was already 36C (96.8F) and the sun's barely even up!

My husband is a plumber and they get sent home when the temperature reaches 37C, he was home by 8am this morning. He was home by 8:30am yesterday morning. Looks like I have to put up with him being home all week

We have lost 2 of our pet rats this week though due to the heat, we have 1 left and have been doing everything we can to keep him cool. Frozen ice bottles in his cage and wet towels over the top (that we need to re-wet about every hour) but they seem to be doing the trick.

I like the heat - but not this hot.

              Hi Kim,

              Your not kiddin

I don't think my heating has been off all week

Gosh what I wouldn't give for a bit of sunshine
We're getting a bit of 'bracing' sunshine down here occasionally. I caught some the other day, spread myself out and soaked up the vit D and I could honestly feel it making me feel better and burning away the S.A.D. syndrome.

What I would give now to be sitting outside the Stamford Arms in Scarborough Beach, (the Western Australia Scarborough) keeping my fluid levels up and waiting for the Freo doctor to blow in at 2pm....

We had a few 45 degree days there and it was fine, as long as you didn't try and do anything except enjoy it.

I know that it is uncomfortable for many people but the weather here right now is just so lovely so balmy and nostalgic.. reminds one of the carefree days of childhoood that even a simple walk in the park can be a pleasure that takes you back to the heady days of just having pure fun in the sun.
Nothing more and nothing less.. just the joy of the sun beaming down on you giving you that invigorating feeling..

I lived in Darwin a long time ago and there is plenty of water and the temperature is never as hot as we have experienced, but you have to LOVE high humidity along with fairly high temperatures. They do not call the build-up to the wet season as the suicide season for nothing.

The bushfires are a total disaster here, less than 90k from where I live.

The aircon died a week ago, was supposed to be fixed on Tuesday, the repairman didn't come til Thursday and then he had the wrong part, now won't be fixed til Monday, supposedly.

      Hi Ivan,
The heat in Victoria (a southern State) has had its nasty side - the 47C (116F) temperatures have brought bush fires which have destroyed houses and many are dead or missing. Whole townships have been destroyed.

In the north (Queensland), they've been hit with torrential rain and floods.

Ironically, both extremes are happening at the same time.

In the Sydney area it's been hot but manageable. Probably about 33-35C today.

I hope those in the south and north fare better today
Yeah, beyond a laugh and a joke, I hope everyone is safe and well.

But you gotta understand, some of us are seriously jealous, in the nicest possible way.

On a sad note, yesterday, Sat, was the hottest day ever in Victoria.
46.7 or 116F with massive northerly winds.

There are currently 10 Major bushfires burning out of control around the state.

As of 9PM Sunday night there is 76 confirmed dead as a result.
Over 680 homes lost and 1,000's of hectares of land burnt.

Several small country towns have been erased from the map.

Truly tragic day in Victorian history.

      That it is Craig.

The news footage is almost unbearable to sit through. We're a good hours drive from the worst hit areas but the smoke in the sky is an eerie reminder of what is currently devastating our beautiful country and it's communities.

The fact we've lost our beloved past news reader Brian Naylor and his wife in these fires makes it all the more gut wrenching.

Thoughts and prayers to all those affected.
