He said he knew from the moment they met, this was as good a time as any, and then puts her on the spot of perhaps BILLIONS of people? To top it off, EVERYONE there is watching and pushing and some IDIOT with a mike is pushing it in her face? COME ON! You may scoff at billions, but HEY, I saw it! Ask ANYONE that knows me and they would saw I would be about the LAST to see this! apparently it only hit the net on monday.

Video of marriage proposal gone wrong at UCLA basketball game - The Dagger - NCAAB*Blog - Yahoo! Sports

WOW! I have heard of some GREAT proposals and wondered if I could EVER top them. Some were even LOW BUDGET, but timed SO well, etc.... This is one of the WORST!

    Awkward....

Why anyone would propose like that is beyond me...

Damn.. I feel for the guy.

Theres nothing worse than pouring your heart out to someone & telling them how you really feel, just to be shot down.. It sucks. lol my personal favorite: "the timing just isnt right.."

In this case WORSE! He did EVERYTHING wrong! He EVEN pushed her away, when she went in to give him a peck. I got the impression it wasn't really going to be a kiss. And she acted at first as if to say, I am not interested, then as if to say, let e look at the ring first, and then as if to say "You call THAT a ring?". All I can be sure of though is that he did EVERYTHING wrong.

This was already seen by most at the event, most watching the event, people that happened across it on youtube and yahoo. It will probably be on news programs, etc... Some shows carry stuff JUST LIKE THIS that happened between 12/24-12/25 and 12/31-1/1 inclusive. It may be on all those! YIKES, what a time for it to happen!

For those that don't know, there is an old christmas tradition of hanging mistletoe somewhere. and if a person is under it, it is like asking to be kissed. Mistletoe Christmas, Mistletoe Symbol of Love So this game had cameras where they would aim them at apparent couples with the expectation that they would treat it as mistletoe (hence the name mistletoe cam). NORMALLY the pictures would only show up on a huge monitor that all watching the game could see.

That's not as bad as being stood up at the alter...but not by much - ouch!
(he should have tried it at the Superbowl, he would have gotten a lot more sympathy)

So we've learned NOT to propose at a college basketball game.

Everybody knows that if you're going to propose to your girlfriend at a basketball game it has to be an NBA game - at center court!

That didn't work as expected either.

      Neither did this attempt...

A basketball game is clearly not the time or place to propose to a woman.

But surely she'd say "yes" if you proposed to her at the food court in the mall... right? What could be more romantic than the food court in the mall?

Yikes... Poor guy. But my sympathy lies more with the woman (surprise!).

I would have hated if my husband proposed in a public setting. I wouldn't have run away, but I definitely would have been uncomfortable (plus I'd have to question how well he knew me).

What's the weather like in Ottawa nowadays? All of a sudden, a couple of relatives from Ottawa are planning to visit me in Vancouver, and I was thinking that weather might have something to do with it.

        Kind of off-topic, but hey...

Overall the weather has been much warmer than usual which is nice - but the warmer weather has lead to more freezing rain (terrible for driving).

Maybe they want to see you, not just escape the Ontario winter!

What a B. She could've at least said yes so as not to crush the guy on national tv and then afterward sometime in private, possibly a day later, that she needs more time or no at that time. While that's still bad for him, it's not NEARLY as bad as what he had to experience in front of everybody. You could see the look of pure devastation on his face as the mascot escorted him off the court. She really didn't care about his feelings at all. I really feel for the guy. That made me uncomfortable as all get up to watch.

I find it hard to believe they hadn't discussed marriage previous to his proposal.

Here's a cute proposal story for you Steve-

After I graduated high school, it was generally agreed that I was going to become engaged to my then boyfriend. He was a few years older than me and I guess ready for this step. I was going to college and we weren't going to get married right away but he was going to put a ring on my finger before I went to college.

Despite the foreknowledge of the proposal, I really wanted to be surprised. As a joke, he bought a gumball machine ring and we used to practice getting engaged with it. He would take my hand and slip the ring on and ask me to marry him.

One night we were going out to a nice dinner and were dressed up and I was pretty sure this was going to be the night. It was already dark and we were in the car in the parking lot of the restaurant. He said something like let's get engaged and without any ceremony slipped the ring on my finger.

I thought this was still a practice run but then realized the ring didn't scratch. In fact, it felt smooth as silk. He succeeded in surprising me!

We didn't marry but at this point of my life I wonder how it would have worked out if we did.

That IS cute! The gumball ring and all may even have been a way to not only gauge your reaction and giv you some comfort, but ALSO to properly determine ring size!

I have heard some funny ways of proposing. As I recall, one included a trip down a river that was stopped at some point, and seemed to be a bad situation out in the middle of nowhere, and there was an area where they could relax and a table was revealed along with a nice meal, almost like a high class restaurant in the middle of noplace, and he proposed there, She said yes.

I DID hear about an "arranged" marriage. the couple had had a friendly relationship when they were younger, and the groom to be went to the parents home(Unmarried women tended to live with the parents, and it is generally expected that you get the fathers permission.). The father acted almost like he didn't even know the guy, and let the wife to be decide, and the father opened the door to reveal she was there, etc... HE Proposed, she said yes, and last I knew, they had been happily married for several years.

The cutest ones I have heard about were ones where the woman had NO idea he would propose then, and she had some control. It seems like all the thoughtful ones I have heard of ended up with her saying YES. Of course, they were more than things like slipping a guy some money and saying HEY, point the camera my way.

I've noticed a trend lately that the proposal has to be unique and memorable. Getting on one knee, professing undying love and offering a gem are no longer enough. This seemed to follow on the heels of the impossibly romantic and special wedding. A church, a gown and a dinner with music are no longer enough.

Unless one spends the gross national income of a small third world country, the wedding does not match her dreams. And the white picket fence has been replaced by a MacMansion.

Weddings in general have been grossly blown out of proportion. Meanwhile the sanctity and permanency of marriage has not.

Are you serious? if you didn't know a woman was ready and waiting for the proposal - you might not want to put it on public display. It looks like either a bid for attention or an attempt to force a positive response.

I think the "unique" aspects of some proposals has more to do with getting on youtube and in the news than anything else.

I felt sorry for her as I watched her expression change - he put her on the spot and embarrassed her in public....and she was honest (or private) enough not to feed into his fantasy.

Yeah, tell me about it! Historically, the woman, at least in western society, is treated like a QUEEN! SHE calls the shots in nearly everything and even has a voice in some stuff for the groom. They have a BANQUET, have a marriage in a big place that may be ornate. She wears a VERY expensive gown. She is presented with a ring that is supposed to be worth about 3 months of the mans income. When she enters, all are supposed to stand and look with HER being LITERALLY the center of attention.

It has gotten SO expensive that the place is usually rented...The CLOTHES are usually rented! Sometimes only PART of the cake is real! They EVEN have gowns that are made out of cheap material(sometimes PAPER), so they are single use! Still, it costs a FORTUNE to get married. If YOU don't think so, you are probably having a CHEAP wedding! Let's say you make $400,000 a year! OKAY, for STARTERS, the ring should cost at least $100,000! You can BET the gown will cost over $10K, etc....

Steve - have you been watching "Say Yes to the Dress" again?

As a child I used to think weddings were just strange. The ladies wore dresses so large their groom had to stand 3 feet away and I thought that was silly. My mother thought I was odd....she said was "the bride's day". Wasn't the guy getting married, too?

In the past, wasn't the marriage "the bride's day" because afterward she lost autonomy? A $100k ring? Oops, I've been marrying the wrong men.... jk - I don't care much for jewelry so it would be wasted on me anyway.

I think weddings would be much better overall if people spent less time worrying about the "the wedding" and more time planning for "the marriage".

I THINK I heard advertisements about that but NOPE, never saw the show.

The ring was supposed to be at last 3 months of the mans income. n MY case it wouldn't be $100,000 but it would STILL be over $30,000. That is STILL a chunk of change! IMAGINE being able to sell a ring and live for a year, pay over 10 months of the mortgage on a nice house, or being able to buy two nice cars,

Actually historically at least in the US, the bride may have had more freedom. I mean only being expected to take care of the household tasks, kids, if any, and certain events. She could otherwise kind of do what she wanted, not having to worry about work, etc....

Of course, in the mid to late 20th century inflation reared its head, and women wanted MORE control, including jobs.

And you're right. It is ironic. I knew this woman one time that I was kind of attracted to. And it was interesting. She told me that she would NEVER marry ANYONE unless she had a BIG wedding and a LARGE diamond ring.

It would be better if people married people that they felt they connected with, and worried more about the FAMILY'S welfare than their imagined prestige or possible future profit from a divorce.

A lot of people talk about homes and cars as being the biggest investments! Historically, almost ANY wedding costs more than a car. Some cost more than a HOUSE! and they often have no tangible value from that expense.
