Considering that so many people scrape a hand-to-mouth existence on the sole premise of making money selling how-to-make-money products, Paris Hilton is doing very well.

Interesting article. I'm glad at least she is doing something positive with her money and life and is working on expanding.

Hate to say it, but when you have the Hilton fortune to fall back on, you don't need to have any brains to make money. You get your name on the title to a business, take some publicity shots, and take credit for anything that the actual hired hands do. Seeing her own a billion dollar business doesn't convince me she's no bimbo.

Her name recognition and connections in business were way bigger than her fortune. She didn't actually inherit a particularly massive sum. Having money is one thing. Knowing what to do with it is another.

And you think those came to her via her own merits? If this woman had the same brains she has now - but had a daddy who worked in a shop, she'd be trailer trash right now. Everything she has is completely connected to her family's name and fortune.

I've just never heard anything directly out of her own mouth that gives me any indication she has any common sense of any sort. I'm sure she picked up some business ed from daddy and family - not convinced she's really all that capable using anything on her own.

At any rate - perfumes are a good industry for her to be in. And, Alexa - you are right she has some great taste in shoes. I'd love to see her in a conversation with Hilary Clinton about shoes. LMAO.

It is not their fault that the corporate media chose them as targets to sidetrack viewers from real issues that could negatively affect investments. While celebrities want publicity, the direction it took in their case was abusive. So, call me crazy, but I'll stand in their corner on this. They've never wronged me in any way and, in fact, have entertained me. I think public vitriol at them was due to media manipulation. They me have problems, but they're not my problem.

Jim, I live in Canada too :p, and we get the coverage here - and lots of it. I don't know who pisses me off more - Lohan or the judges - what waste of tax payers money.

What I mean by splice is that there are basically 4 scenes. They are apparently 2X2, and the ONLY tie really are a similar woman, a similar man, and the cadence, which seems to break. SO, though it may only be 2 x 2 with 2 scenes having a STANDIN for paris, it is perceived as one stretch of 4 scenes. Paris may have been asked a totally different question. looking at the time, and the station ID, you can see the break. It was at least cut. at least 4 minutes are missing, and the change of station is suspicious, even if they are the same. I found ONE apparently! @11 This is the scene where paris is deciding what to do before getting up.

Lindsay Lohan was SO lucky, and should be praising whatever that she was SO darned lucky! But she is a spoiled brat! I can tell that by all the garbage she has been in, and how she reacted to it.

For paris, I really can't be quite so sure. She comes off as dumb and all. Maybe she is!

She has her name on 14 perfumes? bet she didn't contribute anything to them except her name.
But in todays society, where what is "reported" as news is really a video version of People magazine, and everybody wants to be in the spotlight, you can't blame her.

That's one of the best arguments yet against making IQ test scores synonymous with intelligence. Ahem, reality itself is the best intelligence and ability test. A test might well correlate closely to reality, but it is still inferior to reality -- not the other way around. How well do you perform in the real world vs test score. That is the test of the test, and IQ tests fall short. Close, maybe, but no cigar.

      • Point well taken TB,

However, The argument still plays both ways. IQ does not necessarily determine motivation, only a certain capacity to learn or think...what one does with that opportunity is up to them -

Mohammed Ali's IQ was apparently 78...Andy Warhol's 86 - both considered below average, however, look what they accomplished with drive, determination, creativity, and focus...plus well placed media attention. (or maybe a good team of advisors, consultants, and sponsors.)

Sometimes I get the impression Paris's closest dose of reality was 17 minutes in the Graybar Hilton... (But I have to believe it was a contrived line when she said she did not know what Walmart was...a store that sells walls? She really can't be that naive)

Then again...there is the occasional "idiot savant"...to consider...like 'Rain-man'

          ALI? The BOXER?
          Warhol? The COPYCAT?

WHAT did the accomplish? If you are going to start talking about sycophants, fame, undue flattery, fortune, then you have to start calling a LOT of people GENIUSES, starting with PARIS!

Idiot savants are VERY much below par in almost everything, and astoundingly capable in some unexpected task. So much so that if you saw them I that task you would think they are a genius. I don't think paris qualifies on either side. As for walmart? Who knows? Walmart was around a LONG time before I ever heard about it. I don't even know how I knew about hardee's or hellmans, but I ALSO didn't know about walgreens, or CVS.
I knew about hardee's and hellman's as a kid even though neither was sold within a thousand miles of anywhere I lived. Maybe I saw it on boring jaunts to boston or wisconsin, but there was NO evidence of their existence. Where I lived, they were called "carl's Jr", and "best foods".

Expecting someone to know what walmart is could have been like an australian in 1970 to expect the average american to know what Vegemite is. One thing that paul hogan said got him into acting, and that upset him, was that people said they thought he spoke english well for an australian. They apparently were thinking of austria! Bad example, but it still makes my point.

I interviewed a person a few days ago, and basically tried to get him to state what something was. He couldn't! I tried to get him to describe it, and he could. I GUESS someone could have been feeding him info, or he was parroting something off of a book, but I have seen that happen face to face. So just because you seem to know something DOESN'T mean you can really apply it. And I have always said that that is the difference between knowledge and (wisdom/intelligence). And IQ tests often don't have real applications.

          Steve
          {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[5403296].message }}
  • Aha! My sarcasm has again escaped undetected! Curses Moriarty!

But, alas Paris is not Australian...but perhaps, like our porcine truffle hunting friends, she has a special nose for finding the smell of money!

And apparently, Walmart has not yet planted a store on Rodeo Drive - (yet)

Whether you regard Ali as a draft dodger, or not - he was and still is one of the most recognizable sports figures in the world, and is generally well regarded. His drive and determination got him to that position. Not an IQ of 78.

And you're right...Warhol was a copycat...and Jackson Pollock was just a messy painter - Art is widely subjective and intrinsic, and is often highly regarded by how much one pays, and not for it's actual value?
(in other words, it's worth what you can get somebody to pay for it)

Van Gogh only sold 1 painting out of almost 1000 in his lifetime. Now look...
He went so hungry most of the time, he once bit off his own ear, just for a snack!

You need to stop picking on trailer living people or that hillbilly guy is going to show up and get ya!

Some trailers these days are pretty nice. I lived in one as a baby. Still, I used "trailer trash" in a negative way until I made a friend who was forced to live in a trailer. Her parents had hit hard times and she was really poor and made fun of at school and such. Today she is doing very well but she still gets hurt when she hears that phrase.

ETA I like Paris Hilton. She has a way about her that seems sweet. Yes I said sweet. She does me no harm. And damn if I don't wish I had her money.

Trailer trash, as I have heard it and used it, NEVER referred to people simply living in trailers. When I was in Atwater,CA I lived in a converted trailer(It was like they built a home around it). I have had friends that have had MORE exposure to that. It is irrelevant. In many cases, like mine, and most of my friends, they weren't trailer parks, and were nice areas.

I don't know WHY my mother picked that place, but it WAS kind of nice. But it was rented, and the community WAS nice.

It refers more to people like those on "my name is earl". People that live in a small trailer that is practically uninhabitable in a low class(referring to SOCIAL, NOT income) area, and are STUCK in that mindset. They will actually LOOK DOWN on knowledge, the idea of going to any school, or work. Trailer trash is like an urban version of redneck!

Where I live now most of those people qualify for section 8 and are coming to a neighborhood near you.

And yes I know section 8 has helped a lot of people but there are also a lot of slackers with their entitled hands out who will never figure out a way to make it on their own.

Alas, for the moment, I live in an upper-middle middle to upper middle class neighborhood. No section 8 housing here. 8-( The closest section 8 compatible area is probably over 5 miles away. My mother CLAIMED it was hard for her to get section 8. Granted she had some problems, and tried to trick me. Just saying.... She ALSO said all the places cost over $1000 and I found a NICE one WITH room for a washer and dryer and a nice place in a nice area for less than $500/month. Actually, I found SEVERAL different places. Alas, where I live right now, NO apartments. 8-(

Even the term "redneck" is interpreted differently by different people. An educated woman I know refers to herself as a redneck. She's not in the least bit racist, far-right, or whatever. She's an educated woman who writes screenplays, works as a school teacher, is a country music performer, and has composed hit country songs for a number of well known country music artists. I have a personally autographed CD of hers.

Yeah, I know. I was speaking in the new colloquial like jeff foxworthy with "you might be a redneck IF...". and author of the book "Learn to speak gooder english more fastly".

It's interesting. One site said it was a derogatory democrat term that became a derogatory conservative one, but I considered it simply a non derogatory descriptive term. That's not how many use it today though. 8-(

This is really off topic but I guess I could pull it back in with a comparison to Paris and an ordinary young person.

The old single wide trailers were an excellent way for young people without a lot of money to get a start on their own. It is a shame how it has become a symbol of trashy people.

Also not bad for older people on a fixed income. A few years back I showed someone how he could quit his parttime job by dumping his not paid for home and paying cash for a trailer, with a sizeable nest egg left over. Alas he died in a nursing facility before he had a chance to come back home and make any changes.

I agree that rather than being an airhead, she is a very astute business woman. I find the Ecclestone sisters much more obnoxious. But the fact remains she used extremely bad behavior as a tool to get publicity. It was the notorious porn tape that was purposefully set her off to fame.

Any decent parent with young daughters would be concerned at the message that Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan and their associates are promoting i.e. that rampant materialism and bad behavior bordering on criminality is OK.

I foget about paris BUT, as I recall, lohan DID steal! I practically saw lohan grow up on the screen. she seemed like a nice girl. She COULD have been rich, pretty, etc... and a nice role model! She turned out to be a spoiled brat. If I had wanted her to endorse something, etc.... her whole persona now would kill that idea.
