They should have a name server propagation tool that emails you when the changes are completely effective.
This is one of the most tedious tasks I have, waiting for my nameservers to update grrrrrrr.

The problem is even if the nameservers updated your isp dns servers might not be.

I know that is why I get so frustrated, A friend down the street may be able to pull it up while I'm still trying to get to cpanel. I know I do not need cpanel or the site to work on a website but I like seeing things in action.

Well if you are trying to see your domain in action on your own computer and not wait for dns to propagate you can do that by editing your host file. When going to your browser your Windows computer uses the host file to resolve names. I do it all the time if I dont want to wait.

Assuming you know/have the ip address to your hosting/server account.

Well under Windows 7 you have to open the host file as admin or it wont let you save. I go to the start button, search for notepad then when it shows as an option to select notepad I single right click it, then left click "run as administrator"

The screen will go black for a second then a confirmation box will come up asking to confirm you want to do this, click the yes button.

Now notepad is open you go to file, then select open.

Next you want to navigate to c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc

There you should see a file called hosts, select that file to open and you will see some text. At the end of the file hit enter 2 times to give you some space between the text and what your about to type in. Then you simply type in the ip address then space and the domain name. For example:

          127.0.0.1 mydomainname.com

Replace 127.0.0.1 with the ip address to your site. Once done you save the file and close out. There are additional steps, but let me know if you get this far.

Right, not in the drivers folder, need to go one more folder down called etc. So there should be a hosts file in the etc folder.

Edit: Guess they deleted their post?

Man I've been dealing with this for 5 days... It doesn't help that I know nothing about it, but I spent over 3 hours with hostgator (awesome support) and an hour with name cheap (awesome support) hopefully it's all done in the next couple days.

Who knew changing to reseller hosting with no clue about what you were doing is a bad idea?

I had a guy who swore he "couldn't get my domain to propagate.

Turned out he kept checking the domain and if it wasn't done - he re-entered the info.

Every time he did that the propagation process started over again.

Change the DNS - take a nap or a night off. It'll happen with no muss, no stress.

You have to start somewhere So just keep going. Wait till you upgrade to your own server and have to write code for it lol. Then the fun begins.

Sounds interesting and I tried it up to here, but that didn't produce results so far. I am trying it on a domain that has expired but the files are still on the server. I don't get to the files by doing this, just to someone attempting to sell the domain.

I would like to learn the rest of this for other situations.

So you have the ip address and its pointing to your domain in the hosts file? If so the next step is you have to clear the internal cache.

Go to the start button again, do a search for cmd, the command should show up. Then right click the icon, then left click run as administrator. From there screen goes black for a second, click yes to confirm you want to do this. A black screen then should come up. The next step on the black screen is to type this command:

              ipconfig/flushdns

Then hit enter, should confirm you cleared your dns cache, next type in:

              nbtstat -R

Then hit enter, should say something alon the lines that it successfully cleared the nbt remote cache. Now ping the domain you added in your hosts file and it should resolve to the ip you assigned it. If not then something went wrong in the first batch of steps. If it worked then you might have to close out of your browser then re-open as sometimes browse caches their own lookups.

It's possible! It will only take about maybe 139 days! You would receive the verification approximately 4 MONTHS after the last name server would likely be updated! ALSO, what happens wth all the unroutable DNS, VPNS, and unreachable ones? You may not even ever know they EXIST!

BTW checking the DNS could delay the update AND, if you check, it will set ALL DNS servers so future updates may take LONGER!
