A very sad problem we should all be aware of...

I just came across this:

Corban Addison: The Human Face Of Modern Slavery

Reality check: There are more slaves in the world today than were taken from Africa in the four centuries of the Trans-Atlantic slave trade--over 27 million. Of those, two million are children exploited in the commercial sex trade.

Human trafficking is the fastest growing criminal industry in the world, with annual profits exceeding that of ExxonMobil ($32 billion from sex trafficking alone). The average girl forced into prostitution is 13. Many are younger than that.

And that probably doesn't take into account the huge number of people in "developing" countries "employed" in sweatshops either.

    Sad. Very sad.

It goes beyond sad. This kind of thing is enough to make me hate my own species.

Don't forget the societies where the men keep wives as slaves. They even mutilate their sex organs to keep them docile - and look at "honor" killings. It is just sick beyond comprehension that half of the species can be held in slavery just because of their gender and it is passed off as "marriage".

Men are the primary instigators, but women also take part in the repression of women. Female genital mutilation is ritualistically carried out and promoted by women.

In the countries that do this, if a woman is a proponent, how can you be sure she's not one by force? Perhaps a midwife does the mutilation when the baby is born. Exactly what would happen to her if she didn't? Women in a country that perverted do not act of their own free will - they are told what to do and refusal can be met with violence, imprisonment, or even death. Don't ever forget that. While many of Hitler's "promoters" were brainwashed, many did so because they were afraid for their lives. What about those that cried so furiously at the death of that tyrant over in N. Korea? Sure they "promoted" the idea of grief -- but a few weeks later those that hadn't done so started to be thrown in jail.

There are women escaping from some countries and setting up organizations to fight mutilation and to help other women escape from places that have customs of female enslavement. You can tell me that this is a female supported ritual all day and all night - but I won't believe that any woman would actually propose anything like this if they were free to make their own decisions without reprisal. What supports my statement is that NO woman in any country that this practice is not mandated and enforced ever says it is a good thing - or even that it's okay or justifiable.

It amazes me that some people get more "happiness" from driving a "nice" car and other material things, than they do from treating others in a decent manner. Is that new ipad really worth a little girl's life?

There's some things I just don't understand...That's what I get for trying to rationalize the irrational.

I think we should all start doing something about this... We can brainstorm and then start a little movement or anything that can help free those little girls in the brothel... What do you suggest? Let's take action!

The only problem with THAT is that *****SO***** many companies do it! Apple, for example, uses Fox Conn which has a sweatshop. Apparently MANY do the same thing. It seems nearly every sneaker company does the SAME thing, etc....

I guess the only way to be sure is do something like buy stuff that says MADE AND ASSEMBLED in a country KNOWN to forbid such things. Outside of most natively speaking english nations, and western europe, does anyone knows what all of those are?

BTW I said Made and assembled because there are THREE levels!

      1. sourced. I forget the official term, but this is where the stuff comes from.
      2. made. Is where the PARTS and maybe assemblys are made.
      3. Assembled. Is where the PARTS and/or assemblies are put together.

Some american made cars, for example, at least WERE built from japanese parts. At one pont there was a loophole in a strict rule, and chinese computers sold in the US were ASSEMBLED here! It was cheaper and easier to ship the parts, than the computer.

NOBODY here is likely to EVER MAKE a computer! It is too complicated! They ASSEMBLE the parts. The motherboard, for example, has nearly all the parts, is soldered, and tested.

If you guys really want to do something, here is a video of a movement/organization called PATH (Partners Against Human Trafficking) It's sad, but there is plenty that can be done about it, if one would have the heart to do so..

Steve, you know, we the consumers are the problem. As long as we keep buying, they continue with their current practices - nothing changes.

Yeah, it is just that they time to act was in like the 1970s-1980s. At THIS point, one wonders how you can really stop things. I don't know about canada, but the US is a SHADOW of what it once was.

How does coca cola hurt things? In africa, for example, they have created an entire industry down there. I wish I could remember the name of the documentary, but there is a large bottling plant there that is PRIVATE, and WHOLLY owned by blacks! And some people are SO poor, that they use bicycles, and daily deliver product to stores that are more like small houses. So they have a job selling the same coke that would be sold in the US, and they pay coke ONLY for the syrup. The sellers can all cut their own deals, etc... OH, and the bottling plant is all automated, NO slave labor.

Unfortunately, nike and addidas are among the sneaker makers I referred to, and use chinese slave labor.

Where do you stop? A company may buy stuff from sams warehouse which may buy from a wholesaler which may buy from a jobber which may buy from ome cosultant which may buy from a company that buys assemblies from another company that may have slave labor.

Now, SUPPOSEDLY walmart DOES go to the companies that finally assemble such things and at least one of them supposedly has been found to be using, and hiding, slave labor. People wonder WHERE the knowledge stops. The hiding gives plausible deniability.

And if the companies owners are thrown in jail, the whole makeup of that industry could change. To hear many talk, foxconn has slave labor and shutting it down could kill apple. But China likely won't throw people in jail that are in China.
