I bought a Toshiba laptop earlier this year for around $750. It's a good, solid and reliable little laptop, without the expense of the bigger brand names.

Toshiba sounds good appreciate the reviews.

This hard-drive business is worrisome, is this how all
laptops are made, with a re manufactured hard-drive.

I've had my desktop for more than 3 years windows xp
security pack 2, no problems.

I'm moving to China, so I thought it would be good to get a laptop
instead of carrying the desktop with me, maybe I should bring it,
plus get an external drive as a backup in case the airport has some
weird new rule about computers.

How long do laptop hard-drives normally last, having to transfer
all your files and software to another re manufactured hard-drive every 12 months
is annoying.

I have a Dell, a Toshiba, an HP and a Mac, and out of all of them the Mac has easily been the most reliable. With both the Dell and the HP I have had to replace the hard drive. I have actually replaced the Dell drive twice, the second time with a Toshiba drive The Toshiba has been solid on the hardware front, but the software and drivers have been nothing trouble since day one. The Mac on the other hand has had no hardware issues, no software issues and has worked very well for me for the last year and a half. I run Boot Camp on the Mac so I have both Windows and Mac OSs. Unless you have something very specific you need a PC for, I'd go with a Mac.

I bought my Compaq Presario C700 series for just under $700. I love it. It does "office" jobs pretty well but don't expect to play high ends games on it.

If you find a brand that you like you might want to check out www.tigerdirect.com. I have purchased one Lenovo and one Acer laptop from this company and have been happy with the price, customer service and delivery time.

so far I think I'll hold off on a laptop, and bring my desktop overseas,
plus an external hard drive, plus I can also backup my files using web based storage.

Hi Jeremy123, Just in case you would be considering on buying a laptop again, I would recommend the Asus EeePC 1000H. I have been looking for a light, inexpensive, and reliable laptop with all the possibilities of a desktop PC for two weeks now, and this one so far is my best choice. Whenever you turn off this laptop, the hard drive's read-write mechanism retracts and prevents it from scratching the hard drive's platter disc during small irregular or sudden movements. It has been gaining some good reviews lately.

I wouldn't look past a Mac - having used PCs exclusively before, I can thoroughly recommend switching over.
