WOW, you guys HAVE had snow before, right? If it happens, just make sure you are prepared.

As a country, that means that airports should have things like cherry pickers with sprayers that spray saline, etc... For general infrastructure, that is away from general plant life and sensitive materials, you should have some kind of salt. The more exotic kinds are generally better than normal sodium chloride. In infrastructure, like sidewalks and streets, you should include some sand for traction.

You should ALSO have snow plows for the big stuff, and a place to put the snow.

Hopefully you have made sure that various things, like faucets, won't freeze or will break gracefully.

We have indeeed had snow before in the UK. For a few thousand years or more.

However that is no reason why our great country should be prepared for it.

The slightest hint of snow these days and the roads are gridlocked, schools closed down, trains can't run.

And this is when there is only maybe an inch of the stuff.

One of the greatest excuses as to why the trains weren't running in the UK 20 years ago was because the snow was the wrong type.

This phrase is now in common use in UK for lame excuses.

Well, you will NEVER get rid of crazy people! There are people that drive unprepared cars FAST on snow, which is LOOKING for an accident. There are OTHERS that drive prepared cars SLOW in a drizzle, it will slow things down QUICK! The person that finds a cure for that behavior should win a nobel peace prize(not that that means ANYTHING anymore), and be hailed as a creator of world peace. But it is NOT going to happen!

Steve after 20+ years of plowing snow that still amazes me.
My last gig I drove a 1 ton pick-up with a salter and plow.
I'd be driving down the highway with a full load of salt (traction) in 4wd (more traction) doing maybe 40mph. My speed would depend naturally on road conditions.
Yet as I'd be driving along I always had cars go speeding past me:confused:
If someone was with me we would make bets on which curve in the road the car would go off on
As you know, even here in the northeast people can drive in a snow storm and two days later forget how to drive in snow. It's like every storm is the first time they drove in snow for many people.

Since we just got over a foot of snow...Here's how I prep:

    1. Buy lots of food the day before the storm

    2. Give the guy next door with the snow blower $20 to unbury my truck.

To be honest, the town I live in does a great job with snow removal and the city plows will run until the snow is cleared.

Same here. The town keeps the roads clean and the city (Troy) always have the main streets black and wet (Side streets not so much though).

Here in the UK, people just like something to whine about and the media something to write about.

The subject of snow is right up there with other hot topics such as bickering about the clocks going backwards or forwards.

It doesn't matter how many times it snows, people here will never prepare and they will complain in every instance assuming they are getting it bad, when in reality they are getting it good in contrast to other places where it snows more heavily, yet people whine a lot less and just get on with it....

Not being funny but we only had a couple days disruption and at the worst this only happens maybe one week out of each year. So you might be late for a holiday or get stuck in your car for a little bit with no food or water so what's the big deal?
