My heart is aching for a new puppy!

We've always had cats and I love cats, especially my kitty Latte, but last month something horrible happened!

I developed a severe allergy from a minor one and had an anaphlactic allergic reaction which by the time I arrived to ER, had proceeded to put me into anaphlactic shock. I almost didn't make it they tell me and it was touch and go for a while.

Needless to say, we had to find a new home for our cat and kitty.

Now I have a gaping hole in my heart and want to get a puppy! But hubby doesn't want a dog. It isn't that he doesn't like dogs, we have family and friends with dogs and he pets them, plays with them and even talks baby talk to them, lol! He just doesn't want me to get one!

The best pet I ever had was a dog that I named Snoopy when I was only 10 years old! (I loved Snoopy from the Peanuts gang )

When we first got him, he wasn't allowed in the house. My dad had built him a very nice doggy home, but to me, that was no kind of home for a special puppy, I mean I couldn't live with him in there!

So for the first 3 nights we had him, I sneaked out of bed and grabbed my sleeping bag, put little Snoopy in with me and slept on our covered back porch with him after my parents had gone to sleep. On the third morning, I slept late and was discovered!

It touched my Dad so much, that the rule "No dogs allowed in the house" was revoked for Snoopy! From that day forward, we slept together in my bed. My tenacity and stubbornness paid off!

If I were only that tenacious with IM, haha! Well, IM isn't as loving as my puppy was.

Anyway, back on topic...wait...this is the off topic forum, lol!

Anyway, I want a new puppy sooo bad, but don't know of a way to crack hubby's stubbornness. Any suggestions?

Oh and feel free to share favorite stories of your beloved puppies and dogs, I'm sure I'll love them!

Thanks guys!

Terra

We rescued our dog from the pound when she was about 5 weeks.. she was so tiny & cute!!!

Unfortunately we lost all her puppy photos when the old computer died..

But shes still the coolest dog ever! lol shes a lab/pitbull mix, shes super smart. We have like 30 toys for her, and you can tell her to go get one of them and she knows exactly what you're talking about.

She'll go pick it out & bring it back all wiggling & happy.. lol so adorable <3

Anyway, just take him to the pound with you to pick one out! Tell him you just wanna go & look. Once you're there, he wont be able to say no to rescuing one.

    Terra,
I had an african grey parrot that we rescued .We had her for a year or two,but the problem was she only bonded with me. No one else could handle her,and she bit my wife a couple of times when she tried to.
After a lot of complaining she managed to get me to give in and get rid of her.
But she decided she wanted a parakeet instead. So in September of last year we got the pick of a litter of newborn parakeets. We ended up getting two,who we named Penn and Teller. We both fell in love with those birds. After all,we hand raised them from the time they were able to leave there mother.

Well, now I get my transplant. Turns out ALL birds have a microscopic parasite that ,because my immune system is so depressed by anti rejection drugs, can kill me. Literally.

So,what does this have to do with this thread? Well,my wife and I have also been going back and forth on getting a dog. The two she had were old when I met her and both have died in the past 10 years. We weren't adverse to getting another one,but she wants a miniature dachshund and I want a German Shepard.

Well,in my delerium after the operation,I broke down and told her she could get her dog,so,after a bit more recovery,we will be looking too.

Hi Terra - I love dogs so much too and don't have one - for a few reasons (no yard, no responsibility). Dogs are a lot more 'labor intensive' than cats by a long shot.

I once fell in love with a little baby bunny and figured he would be a perfect puppy for me because they like their cages (can be controlled and contained), don't need to go for a walk, etc) --

Well, his personality was closer to a cat -(leave the food and go away, woman) but it was still fun having a 'baby' to spoil with treats, etc. again and I had a great time for 10 years until he got too old and I had to put him down.

So for one thing you could consider an alternative -- and you never know how this will work in the mind of a hubby - he may end up saying, ok just get a dog (you could approach him on pet pyranahs, boah constrictors, big lizards, monkeys, etc.).

If you could love a small dog he might be seen as less of a problem than a big one - of course I rarely like small dogs so you may feel the same way.

You could also just keep it low key and pine and wish out loud every time you see a dog. Show him every time you see a picture of a cute dog but don't bring it up that you just have to have one. Then put on your best starving refugee face for a few hours. He may relent out of sympathy and surprise you someday.

I will bet if you do get a dog that your husband will love him - and I bet also that you will pull it off eventually - he is probably leary about your recent experience in the ER, Yo?

    Pray about it...

Just remember that puppies grow up to be big slobbery dogs...LOL...I'd be careful too if you had such a bad reaction to your cats, because dogs do have fur too. But I hear they have some new breed mixes that are supposed to be allergy-free, which may be worth looking into if you're serious about getting a puppy.

What a brilliant idea, Who's That Guru! I am so going to try this!

Your dog sounds so wonderful, sigh.

      Kim, Awww

So you know how it feels to have to give up precious pets for your health. But, you give me hope in hubby having a weak moment and saying Yes!

And what is amazing is that a miniature dachshund is exactly what I was wanting! But I would settle for a dachshund and other small dog mix. My beloved Snoopy was actually a dachshund/beagle mix. He was so cute with the the long body of a dachshund, legs somewhere in between a dachshund's and beagle's being short but thick and stubby and then his adorable long beagle ears that looked like wings when he bounded.

Thanks Pat, for some reason when I read your post, I got tears in my eyes! Hubby may be a little hesitant with the incident so fresh in his mind, but when they did the allergy testing, dog dander wasn't a culprit, only cat dander.

We do have 3 acres and live on a private road in a rural neighborhood and room isn't a problem there. I'm going to hold out hope and wait for the surrender. I know he will love the dog too, close to as much as I will.

I'll give it a little time and lots of prayer, thanks! Oh and thanks for adorable pictures of puppies to coo about and drool over!

Wirelessgeek, allergy to dogs isn't a problem and I know what happens to puppies as they grow, lol! My dad was an AKC breeder for over 10 years and I know how to raise and train dogs like I know the back of my hand.

And most importantly, I still want one!

      Just look at those faces!

How could anyone just drop of faces like that? Abandon them?

I want to go rescue a puppy, but presently hubby is still saying no.

And Pat was right on as one of the things he mentioned as I mentioned how much I want a little puppy to love was indeed the, and I quote, "Allergic reaction to the cats fiasco".

Sigh, back to waiting a little longer, but I refuse to give up!!

MissTerraK I know exactly how you feel. I do have a dog but I want another one. I show my dog and I want another show dog because I really enjoy showing and I just love dogs and would love another one in my family. But....... my husband says no! We've been having the dog argument for probably 7 or 8 months now and it's still NO!

But I haven't given up! If there's a will there's a way! Now, I might go get a sleeping bag and tell him he's sleeping on the porch for a while.......

I want to have this blown up to poster size, laminated and the back magnetized so that I can place it on the refrigerator where hubby can see it every day, because the "Happy Wife, Happy Life" plaque there now certainly isn't doing the job on this one!

Even hypoallergenic dogs can cause reactions in sensitive people so "try before you buy".

Why not consider fostering for a rescue group for a little while. I've just had 3 rescue puppies for a few weeks over Christmas, as well as my own four dogs. These little pups were dumped and saved from the dog pound, they were with us until they found their forever homes, so it was never going to be a permanent arrangement.

I'm sure there are rescue groups over your way who also need temporary foster homes for dogs and pups. It would be a good way to firstly test out your allergies, and secondly give your husband a taste of life with a dog, and if it doesn't work out for any reason, you know it's short term.

Watch out though, there are many stories about failed foster homes - where the foster carer falls in love with their temporary guest and decides to adopt them.

Good luck. I can't imagine a house without dog hair - I'd feel lost!

    MissTerraK,

I'm sorry to hear about your unfortunate problem. But slight allergies CAN become more major. I hope you get a cute little puppy that you both enjoy. Dogs have often been maligned, and your husband may have had a bad experience. It is possible that he may come to love a dog.

    wirelessgeek,

In a way, HUMANS have fur. In any event it is all around us. Don't ask me WHY, for if I knew precisely why, I would be filthy rich, but cats and dogs trigger different reactions. So an allergy to one does NOT mean an allergy to the other. Allergies are often triggered when people are younger, and the immune system believes that the offending agent is some dangerous parasite or something. Many say that they aren't acquired later. Apparently Terrak acquired an allergy to cats, but not to dogs, and it has recently gotten worse. So she likely won't have a problem with dogs.

Puppies are not to be ingested, and can only be taken internally by heart...

They can, however, be used and enjoyed liberally externally, by hugging, rubbing, stroking, walking and playing without many bad side effects...and are known to illicit a general sense of well-being...though sometimes can be taken to exhaustion.

One must rub them all over your body to enjoy the full love bug effect!

    Haha Ken!

I first read your post and thought, Yikes! Where did that come from Ken?

But then after reading your following posts, I get it, you're a cat lover and just turned the tables on the "a certain nationality" (trying to be politically correct) eat cats.

I love cats too, but unfortunately, life has interfered and threw a huge wrench into that.

But, having a dog is a whole new world! You actually get to have a give and take relationship! The points 3M gave are spot on! And there are many more!

I also have raised 3 children and can honestly say, my kids couldn't detect something was wrong the moment I entered the door and come and shower me with kisses and stick by my side until they perceived all was well again!

And my dogs never back talked or blurted out, "I hate you" when they didn't get their way! My kids never desired to please me at all costs! My kids didn't want me to have authority and fought me every step of the way while my dogs not only respected it, but yearned for it.

My kids have grown up and are wonderful! But if you ask me, they took a heck of a lot more training than any puppy ever did!

    Convinced yet?

I think Audrey had the right answer, Terra:
It's often easier to ask for forgiveness than to ask for permission - nuff said :-)
Frankly - when I got my first dog, I didn't ask "permission". I just said I was going to get one when I found the little guy I wanted, and I went and got him. Period. No discussion necessary. I don't look at the "other half" as being my master, so I don't ask permission. If I want a dog and am willing to take care of it, nobody else has a say in the matter. A quick reminder that you are a wife, not a daughter, should get the point across nicely. If he still protests, just remind him that you haven't asked HIM to care for it. Then go get your little guy. Obedience is an obsolete attitude.

Honestly - you are so patient. He has no clue how fortunate he is. But when he gets a clue, he'll realize that if you want a puppy, you damned well deserve one.

      Thanks for the support!

And you are absolutely correct, when I want something, I do get it.

I've never asked his permission for anything, ever in our marriage and I'm certainly not going to start now.

I've only mentioned that I want a puppy, and he says no. I do like to discuss things with him and I'm sure he knows by now, if I say I want something and it's a true desire, whether he is on board or not, I do eventually get it.

I'm just biding my time, getting him used to the idea. Sometimes he'll get me what I say I want, sometimes we go and get it together and sometimes I just have to go and get it myself.

And to be fair to him, as he will be a part of my puppy's life, I'm giving him time to get used to it. And to be fair to my new puppy, I'm giving him time to get used to it.

Haha, for all of the pets we've ever had, when I mentioned I wanted one or another one, his first reaction was no. But just try to keep him away from them once they're here, lol!

And I know he will eventually love my puppy just the same.

My biggest hope is that he can feel like he had a part in the decision and not feel neglected once it is here. Haha!

Well, as you know, Terra - I'm pigheaded and relentless when it comes to my dog. That's because I train them and want them to understand completely who their master is. Not sure what type of dog you are getting, but if you get a working class breed, everyone else needs to stand back a few feet and let YOU be the sole owner. Not that they can't play with it or enjoy him, he will just have to know exactly who his actual owner is. Of course, the working breeds might be a little larger than you have in mind anyway. I love the gentle giants, though, and that is their personality.
