Whitney Houston Death: Sony Raises Prices Just Hours After Death . . . Would You Do The Same?

Sony raised the iTunes price on Whitney Houston's Greatest Hits album by 60% just hours after her death.

I know they are a corporation, have shareholders to report to, etc... but to me, this just doesn't feel right.

What say you? If you were in control of Sony Music, would you have done the same?

What about in your own business, have you ever profited from the misfortune of someone else (such as registering a domain name for a quick flip)?

Yes. She is going to be in high demand for weeks, maybe months.

She will get a lot of extra radio play, increasing demand further.

It is a ready-made opportunity for large profits.

I can see how this would make a lot of people uncomfortable. The truth is though, if you only make business decisions based on emotions, you're going to be pretty poor. The demand is going to go up on her albums for sure so they are just trying to take advantage of that.

How bout releasing the Michael Jackson tour practice footage "This is it," similar situation but not as obvious of a cash grab.

yea. I made like $500 from the whole Beyonce faking her pregnancy thing... once she had the baby, I watched my traffic go from around 1k uniques on down.. Decided to shut it down after that..

Tried to sell it but I knew it would be a tough sell being it was only focused around her pregnancy...

Started in late september and shut down in Jan...

Crazy that they would do that though..

Faking a pregnancy, and someone dying of an OD in a bathtub are completely different in terms of appropriate to promote or not. Imo, anyway.

I do agree that this is crossing the line. I'm sure a lot of people will be tweeting about this and it will spread like fire... there will be some backlash against these money w**res.

Are you sure SONY did it? This isn't like THEY have a limited supply. Look at ricky nelson! The show is gone, much of his family may be, HE is, but it STILL sells!

I expected the increase. In business, it's known as supply and demand.

I never got around to purchasing Whitney's movie, "Waiting to Exhale" and I knew it would go up so I ran out and purchased it the next day.

Another day in the life of commerce is all.

Why are people so offended by this?

In the world of art (I'm talking painters now) when a painter dies, his works
go up in value almost regardless of how popular he was while he was alive.

The famous artists? Forget it. You can't buy their stuff unless you're loaded.

This is the way the world works.

        Deal with it.

That may be true Steve, but they did not raise the price on ten million copies of those paintings - only the originals.

It's not like Whitney Houston itunes will run out...this is manipulation of supply and demand shown in it's worst light. They are simply capitalizing on the sudden death of their "product" - Can they do it? Sure. But that does not make it any less shameful or cannibalistic...yes, business is business, and in the business world if you do not take advantage of emotional surge, you are a fool...but this is indicative of the reason people pirate SONY in the first place. SONY did not really need to do this. Sales volume would have sufficed in this case.

Ya, works of art are completely different...that's true supply and demand.

I think I would go in the other direction and lower prices on her songs a little. I actually think they would make more doing that and give the impression of it being a tribute to her.
Say they raised the price from $2 to $4 dollars a song. Someone may see that and only buy one song. If they lowered the price to $1 a song, the same person may buy 10.

I'd consider this only AFTER doing my market research first.

Thom, the sad truth is, most people, after an artist dies, runs out and buys
all their stuff. That's human nature.

So what reason would Sony have to LOWER prices when they're probably going
to sell the same amount of product either way?

Without having the market research numbers, I can't say either way.

Regardless, it's Sony's decision and I can understand it from a business perspective.

FWIW, if I didn't care about the money, I would have slashed prices in half for a week. But that's just me.

See Thom - THAT is smart marketing - that way, they pay 'tribute', still make bank, and they don't come out looking like aholes for doing it...

Send SONY your resume'...they need you.

But Steve has a point, they may sell the same amount either way...but - if you did it as you say in the form of a 'tribute' to the artist, it might invoke more empathy, and positive public relations at the same time.

I don't see anything wrong with what Sony is doing. People buying her albums now that she's dead could have done so while she was alive but they didn't.

What's worse, Sony raising prices of her music, or people suddenly wanting her music now that she's dead, when they didn't take time to buy it when she was alive?

  • I didn't realize the increase was this dramatic - this report has the jump over 150% in 30 minutes for a greatest hits album to jump from $4.74 to $12.62 -
That a pretty radical increase in my view...I was under the impression it was much less than that -

The people complaining about the album prices should have purchased the album(s) when she was alive and would have benefited from the purchase.

Well, even after my last post (of which I still agree) ...I agree with Daniel that you have a point - I guess no sympathy for the empathetic or the devil...

For me personally, It does not bother me, as I didn't buy one then...and I wouldn't buy one now.

She was a person - but her music is a commodity.

If a company expects an increase in demand for a product - they often will increase the price. It's business.

Just the same as what happened to the King Of Pop. The music of Whitney Houston will earn more and more than when she'll still alive.

That was not a good move in my opinion. Then again, art prices often go up after an artist dies, unfortunately.
