Jim Croce once said, "if you mean what you're singing, people understand."

In this video from China's Got Talent (which sure resembles the American and British versions of the show"), a 12-year-old Mongolian boy from Inner Mongolia, dressed in his ethnic attire, tells judges that he's going to sing.

The judges ask him about what he's going to sing. He responds that it's a Mongolian song that he sings when he misses his mom. The judge asks him where his mother is and he answers, "In heaven." The judge then asks him where his father is and the boy says he's also in Heaven and that both parents died in an automobile accident. The song is in Mongolian, but I have to say that I was moved (being a sucker for tear-jerkers) and felt I understood it though I didn't comprehend a word of the song. Hey, Beethoven's 6th symphony created a mood that felt like pastures, though it had no lyrics.

When the boy is asked what his future dreams are he says, "Invent a grass-making machine so the whole world can be covered in grass." When I heard him say that, I thought of where he lives on Inner Mongolian plains where grass would be so precious.

(We're finding YouTube videos in Chinese for our son to help increase his exposure to Mandarin in various forms, eg conversation, songs)

I think it's possible that despite not understanding the words of the song, being human gives me the privilege of being able to understand it's message. For such a meaningful and moving performance, I commend him for being able to maintain his emotional composure.

    Thanks for the share.

Great idea if he ever wants to become a Warrior. This kid has potential.

I don't think the words are as important as the passion and feeling behind them...

I love the look on the faces of everyone in the video. Kinda like Mona Lisa smiles.

I have found over the years that music is a universal language. People of all ages and languages, all backgrounds and all colors will understand a moving musical piece or an awesome heartfelt vocal performance.
