The Great British Countryside...

...is quite literally peppered with the most stunning array of castles and stately homes with more history attached than you can shake a stick at.

St Michael's Mount, Marazion, Cornwall - St Michael's Mount :: Home

Home to the St Aubyn family some parts of the castle buildings date back to the 1100's. It was from the top of this castle in fact that the very first beacons were lit to warn about the impending Spanish Armada in 1588.

Incidentally St Michael's Mount has a near twin quite literally, in the shape of Mont Saint Michele off the Normandy coast in northern France. Coincidence?

I know this will sound quirky...but whenever I look at old castles and manors, it cracks me up that the 'chair in the hall' has been sitting there for over 400 years -

(It's a good thing they have people who dust )
