Hey guys I'm an Australian student that just recently finished high school and am currently on a gap year. In this year I intend to educate myself extensively, especially about the stock market. My dream at the moment is to become an investment banker or a sole trader (if i become good enough at the game). If you have any advice to give me about courses or websites that I could go on to expand my very basic knowledge about the markets and the game that would be greatly appreciated!

    • Like your positive attitude Alex.
I find that if you "Act as if", and think about goals as if you have already achieved them, you tend to get there a lot quicker. Yours is a big one, but you have the right attitude.

      You're thinking big.
Heck, even if you only achieve 1% of your goal, you'd still be doing ok

      All the best.

Hello Alex, I admire your drive. Shoot for the stars! I hope you find the wealth of information on this forum helpful in reaching your goals.

I don't know how much help you will get in learning the trading game on this forum, since this is an Internet Marketing forum. But I'm sure there are some stock market guys hanging around.

        Good luck...

Hi Randall! That would be extremely helpful. I have just recently began to read about forex and I have found it to be a fascinating topic! Is there anything that you are interested in and that I could possibly help you out with?

      Cheers,
      Alex

I don't know.... Steve jobs probably didn't plan to be so rich. I KNOW steve wozniak didn't. Ross Perot didn't. Apparently sam walton didn't. Warren buffet probably didn't. Michael dell didn't. BTW most of the money warren buffet made was almost certainly NOT as a stock investor! He used tricks to leverage money to buy companies or gain control, changed them, and some of the first and/or better ones he put into a kind of portfolio with a kind of rigged investment system that OTHERS buy!

Now, there was a low level cook that didn't plan to get rich, and he DID! IN THE STOCK MARKET! He was VERY lucky! He taught a friend of mine, who WAS his boss. He retired after his last big score which was BEFORE the subsequent collapse! That friend ALSO took a lot of courses. HE did NOT do so well!

One of the HARDEST truisms for the stockmarket, updated a bit for the times, is.....

The time to invest is when people AREN'T talking about the stock market on every corner, people are AFRAID that it is going to CRASH, ALL subsidies have STOPPED, and it goes up with more volume than it goes down on. So, 1988,2000,and 2009 were good times to invest. The average person invested around 1986, 1998, and 2007!

    • "Genius is one percent inspiration, ninety-nine percent perspiration"

      Thomas Edison once said that...

The only problem is today, it's been completely taken out of context...

The one percent get inspired...and the ninety-nine percent do all the perspiring!

Now that's what I call positive thinking! You can achieve a small % of that and still do extremely well. Best of luck!

Investment banking is a tough business to be in and is extremely competitive at every level. They'll make you work extremely hard. I'm talking waking up for 7 being at the office for 8 working till 12:30, then catching bite to eat (30 minutes tops), back at the office for 13:00 working till 16:45 for a 15 minute break and then it's back to work at 17:00 working till 18:30 and heading out for some dinner, you'll then be expected back for 19:30 and working right up to 23:30. Some guys will head out for a beer before heading home but most will go home, because in another 8 and half hours you'll be back to it again.

You will have no life, did I mention weekends? I think you need to research the job, I think your a young guy who sees all the gilts and glamor of investment banking and not the real hard graft that goes into it.

I mean depends on what you do, investment banking isn't the same as being a day trader. Totally different job.

You also have to have a type A personality to survive in that environment, most of them are sharks and they will smell the fear and weakness in you right away.

They have tons of great, free information. They'll teach you everything from analysis for trading , vocabulary, corporate finance all the way to economics. If you're interested in getting into iBanking as an Analyst, I'd recommend a book called "Investment Banking: Valuation, M&A, LBOs" by Joshua Rosenbaum. This book taught me how to value companies, which helps in my long-term investments. I'd also recommend watching the movie "Margin Call." That movie will give you a realistic view of how banks contributed to the 2008 meltdown. Check out also both Wall Street movies, the one 1987 and the one from 2010.
Thank you a lot for the information! I have been on Investopedia and I too have discovered it to be a very insightful website. I will certainly look into the book that you have recommended! I have watched all 3 movies and believe that they give an interesting but at times very over-dramatic portrayal of what it is like to work as an investment banker. But movies are made to entertain and all 3 certainly do so.

    Cheers,
    Alex
