could this piano concerto 21 be the greatest ever?
I particularly adore part 1 and 2.

He is my favorite composer....who is yours?

I was just listening to Mozart last night on WinAMP Radio and although it was initially nice, it became increasingly irritating.

I wish it didn't but it did and it seems to happen every time I listen to classical.

It's good for about 15 mins.

I guess I'm not in the groove yet!

As a person very interested in best of every music genre...

I have 30 classical music compositions on my ITunes and listen to the playlist about once a month while using my computer.

    How'd that happen????

Someone gave me a CD with the top 100 classical music compositions and I went through them looking for familiar tunes.

I found about 30 songs that I heard before but didn't know their names or who wrote them etc.

Stuff like, Hungarian Dance, Swan Lake, William Tell Overture, The Nutcracker, Beethoven's 5th etc.

( the disco version of the 5th is pretty cool )

Valkyrie Ride Of The Valkyries: Used in Bugs Bunny/Kill The Rabbit. It was also used in Apocalypse Now.

I couldn't begin to tell you who I think is the best composer but I do enjoy my playlist every now and then.

TL, that's almost exactly how I got started on classical music - greatest hits CDs And some of the same songs.

I'm no connoisseur, but I do enjoy listening every once in a while.

Also, I used popular TV to get my sons into classical (Bugs Bunny used a lot of classical...). Worked. My 21 year old even plays classical on his electric guitar.

  • William Tell Overture - no, no...that's called the theme from "The Lone Ranger"

Fantasia is another good way to introduce a kid to classical...

I went the Bugs Bunny route myself - you can't argue with the classics!

    (Ok...it's Tex Avery - but I couldn't resist! :rolleyes

Jackie Evancho got my toddler hooked on opera (not something I ever enjoyed, lol), but only when she sings it. One night in trying to tape an episode of Revenge or some such nonsense, I accidentally recorded a Jackie Evancho concert on TV (before we got rid of the TV and stopped watching it altogether). I played it to my toddler who was mesmerized by Jackie Evancho and her singing from the get-go. He insisted on watching the concert over and over again that night. He still insists on listening to her CD's on our stereo. His word for music in general is "Jackie"

Jackie has a heavenly voice but her stage movements have reminded me of a marionette.. beauty but no passion yet. I hope she continues her career.

Oldman in the Professional opines on Mozart:

    I love Beethoven as well..

Alex: No. No! NO! Stop it! Stop it, please! I beg you! This is sin! This is sin! This is sin! It's a sin, it's a sin, it's a sin!
Dr. Brodsky: Sin? What's all this about sin?
Alex: That! Using Ludwig van like that! He did no harm to anyone. Beethoven just wrote music!

Bach. Especially by Glenn Gould and Wanda Landowska. Pablo Casals is no slouch either (as I recently discussed with Pepe Romero).

I often debate the merits of Bach vs Mozart with one of my drinking buddies. Mind you, I have nothing bad to say about Mozart or Beethoven. It's just that Bach rises to a higher level.

My favorite time of year is the ten days before New Year's Day when WKCR-FM (Columbia University's student radio station) plays Bach 24 hours a day.

Kieth Jarrett is mostly known as a great jazz musician but I believe he also won a grammy for a classical album. Here he plays Bach:

Felix Mendelssohn wrote his marvelous Rondo Capriccioso at age 15.

this was my father`s favourite piece. He played it every day of his life just about.

Mozart is definitely the greatest. My daughter plays his works beautifully on her piano - even the dog sings along with her (or howls anyway)

I enjoy all of the old classical composers. One more contemporary composer that
produced one of the best pieces of all time is George Gershwin's
    "Rhapsody in Blue. "

I prefer Beethoven over him, when it comes to classics.
As for a favorite composer overall, I'd pick Jeremy Soule over anyone.
