It started out SO nice, and then she had to bring in perceived racial epithets!

    • I can certainly try to understand her point of view...But then - she also mentions "The sports-store crowd in which I was displaying my Tae Kwon Do shopper skills" - so is she stereotyping herself?

When she mentioned a Chinese American guy getting killed with a baseball bat, because they thought he was Japanese, and then the assailants were not charged? But fined $3000? Are you kidding me? How did they not get charged?
Was 1982 a typo? Are you sure she didn't mean 1882?
Where was that again...Detroit - or the old west?

There used to have a saying in the old west, but it sounds like that poor guy did not have a "Chinaman's chance"*, (and I do not mean that in a derogatory way whatsoever...)

The story of the fellow getting beat up reminded me of a similar incident that might have gotten out of hand I encountered a few days after 9-11...when emotions were high. I went to a bank machine and 3 young guys were taunting and threatening a Sikh gentleman and calling him all sorts of things (you can imagine) I explained he was a Sikh to these morons among other things, only to get the response he is a @#$%^&%$ and $@&&**$###!!!
(I'll translate that -"he has a beard, and a turban - so he doesn't belong here, and we would prefer it, if he went back to his country of origin")

The rest of the conversation would have to be censored anyway...so I"ll end it here -

(*Chinaman's chance, means little or no chance at all. It was an American idiomatic expression in the 19th and 20th centuries. The original phrase, from the California gold rush, was that one had only a Chinaman's Chance in Hell, due to the dangerous work they were made to perform, but it morphed through usage into its current state.
The historical context of the phrase comes from the old railroad and Goldrush days of California, where many Chinese came to work as laborers for the First Transcontinental Railroad, especially the Central Pacific Railroad. In this employ, they were sought out for the demanding and dangerous jobs involving explosives, often for half the pay of the Mexican workers. Yet the Chinese faced higher taxes, denials of citizenship and could not testify in court for violence against them.)

Well, as a tie of NON chinese to labor in business with china AGAINST their will, with little recourse:

Shanghaiing - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

So many think that this group or another is harshly treated, and punishment is less severe BECAUSE of what race/culture they are. That is often WRONG! Look at reginald denny! Did he even get a penny? The jerks that assaulted him really DID get get away with murder! *I* say that they SHOULDN'T CARE if the person is a police officer, black, chinese, indian, or white! They should say YOU killed this guy for NO reason, YOU may risk your life, or suffer HARD labor for the rest of your life!

As for the chinamans chance? They weren't respected, and came here to get better work and got it because of lower wages. Some DID succeed and break the cycle. But that is ancient history. At this point it WAS close to 100 years ago. NOBODY on this forum is responsible for that. HEY, the brits attacked MY culture basically TWICE! Once in Ireland, and again in the US! I don't count ANYONE in the UK as personally responsible! YEAH, they were over 200 years ago, but you have to stop at SOME point.

As for the stupid racism/culture bashes? That has happened EVERYWHERE, and may always happen. Some that some think are muslim are actually hindu! And there are likely others. And some may be peaceful. The last muslim person, that I knew of and worked with, seemed nice. AND, ironically, the Jewish people that are considered the
MOST orthodoxed and are VERY obvious, tend to be the most tolerant of Christians, even in ISRAEL! Some of the LEAST tolerant, ironically, may not even wear a yarmulke!
