I've also noticed birds not normally found here (NW AL) in winter and flocks flying South, then North, then South again...

Shouldn't be a mystery to scientists, Dave. We are in the middle of a magnetic pole migration - which means an impending magnetic pole shift. The magnetic pole has migrated so far from the geographic pole that last year we had a series of quakes - all at the same depths: 10 km and 35 km, indicating that matter is starting to shift to align to the new magnetic pole position. When it shifts far enough, we get regional magnetic anomalies and multiple poles. That can screw up anything that is directed by magnetism.

Incidentally - I didn't just say earth was in danger or we're all gonna die. Magnetic pole shifts happen fairly frequently - there was one in the mid 1800's and several over a couple over a 150 year period or so just before that one. Most shifts are fairly small shifts. It leaves me a bit boggled about why people keep reporting that scientists are baffled about such things. Paleoclimatologists and paleogeologists don't have a problem understanding it. Maybe reporters are talking to people in the wrong fields of science? Or maybe they are talking to money making non-profits or politicians instead? Good grief.
