There is no cow bell, so any at all would be more
I always enjoyed that solo, simple but fun.
When I saw them years ago, both the drummer and the bass player where pretty crazy.

      Thanks Kim!

I love the drums and I thoroughly enjoyed that but not as much as the drummer himself did, lol

Did you see his face when he was playing? He looked like he was experiencing sheer ecstasy and almost like he and his drums were one unit.

It was awesome, but I missed the cow bells.

The first time I heard this song (and solo) I was 18 and I heard it on a high quality reel to reel with very good headphones. It was amazing.

I have yet to see a drummer who didn't make some interesting faces

When I drum, if I feel like I am "on"... which isn't often ... my wife says I make these faces too. And yes, you DO feel like you and the drums are one unit.

Mike I used to have a habit of sticking my tongue out a little when playing (in addition to making faces).
Don't you know yesterday I was playing the Bodhran, trying out a new top-end tipper I made and I caught myself sticking my tongue out

          Scarey ain't it
When I lived in Fl. back in the 70's I would do side gigs with bands who needed a drummer for the night.
One night I was asked to play with a country band at this bar out in the middle of nowhere. The best way I can describe the bar is to say think of the movie Porky's. The parking lot was on one side of a canal and the bar on the other with a foot bridge to get across. I get inside and as I'm setting up the bartender comes over and tells me proudly that we are the first band to play there after they took the chicken wire down from around the stage. Now as a long hair playing the drums below, I was just thrilled to hear that
So at the end of the first set, with half the bar ready to fling beer bottles at me, I find out we're doing Wipe Out to close the set.
I did the "solos" with my feet (double bass drums), filling in the accents with my hands. As soon as we finished, everyone in the bar wanted to buy me shots and beers, ended up having one of the best nights playing I ever had.

Haven't thought of that one in years either. Yeah, it's scary!

Anyway, way to slay em, Thom!

I think surf music is great! I used to listen to this radio show that was nothing but Surf Bands...great show - It's still big around Santa Cruz -

I had a girlfriend from Boston at the time, and she did not get it at all...not even the Beach Boys...it was a "West Coast" thing to her -

I even wanted to start my own Surf Band...I was going to call it "Sarcastic Fringe-Head"
(which is actually the name of a fish I saw once at the Monterey Aquarium...is that a great name for a fish - or what?)

Disc Jockeys loved it! You could put it on and go out to lunch, have a smoke, and come back..."no problem"

It was awesome from the dance floor too. Only band I ever heard that put a built in cigarette break into one of their songs.

Kim - this is absolutely the hippy national anthem as far as I am concerned. This is the song that more defines the 1960s music 'revolution' than anything except maybe 'Stairway to Heaven' -

I know it's not drum solo (off topic!) but I had to post the whole thing - all 17 minutes

No idea why this is a blank graphic but the link in the header will still take you there

I love surf music and it is really akin to punk rock which to me is all about the double-time-drum-beat and contra (backwards) rhythm and my favorite rock n' roll. It's all just so bizzy!

    3M,
I Dick Dale plays a lot near Va Beach and in NC and SC from what I've been told.
The west coast had surf music, but here on the east coast ,and I never heard this term until the last decade, they had shag music. but it is more encompassing than surf music.
Just a bit of trivia :-)
and you have heard the same story I had about the song title, it was suppose to be In The Garden Of Life, true or not,I haven't a clue.
