What language are you learning and why do you learn it?

I've been thinking about it, mainly because of Rosetta Stone... everytime I hear something about it or see a commercial it perks my interest to learn some languages. I don't have a real solid use for additional languages I just think it would be cool to speak Japanese or something.

My brother has been living in Japan for many years. He is fluent in Japanese and has authored a number of non-fiction books in Japanese. He makes a good living as an anti-Illuminati conspiracy theorist over there. Before that he was a Japan-based editor for Forbes magazine. I didn't join him in his anti-Illuminati project, though he offered me significant monthly sum to do so. (Ok, I don't believe in that stuff and think he's kind of nuts). Whoah, I sure digressed here. Now back to work...

If your brother's name happens to be Ben then, you're right - he probably is a bit nuts, but he's a damn interesting nut though.

As for languages, I learned German many years ago, but have forgotten most of it by now. It was relatively easy to learn though, probably on account of already speaking English - once you get into it, the similarities between the two languages are quite surprising.

What's not so similar (at all) is Irish, which I also grew up with. When I say "not so similar", I mean totally alien - it predates English by several thousands years so might as well be alien.

If anyone's up for a challenge, they should try learning it. You'll then be able to fool the people around you into thinking you've had a stroke by speaking like this...

He gets attention in all kinds of places.

I probably wouldn't have twigged who it was without the reference to Forbes though.

I'm astonished by how many people come across him online. I've seen mention of him on an assortment of forums that have no obvious connection to the areas he explores. He's a very smart guy (IQ closer to 200 than 100) but I think he's in over his head with what he's gotten himself into, being protected by Triads and whatnot.

So far, mainly just Spanish, French, German, and Danish.

Spanish... Popular, and just because it is there.

French... Popular, and just because it is there.

German... Several reasons, including that I am part German.

Danish... I visited my aunt and uncle in Denmark, and wanted to understand things better. After I started learning Danish, I called my uncle and said "Hi, Kan Du gaette hvem jeg er?". 8-) "Hi, can you guess who I am?". I think he got a kick out of it. With the danish accent, my voice DOES sound a bit different. BTW sorry if I mispelled danish words. It HAS been about 2 decades since I really tried to do well.

I've been wanting to learn German since my heritage is 100% German, but I have too many goals right now.

My wife on the other hand knows French, Arabic, and Farsi. She also took the Defense Language Proficiency Test and placed in the highest category as well as scored a 99 on the ASVAB. The assignments were not appealing so she is getting a doctorate now.

Well, in the US, some complex text may be greeted by "It's all greek to me". In German, they say "It looks like spanish"! GO FIGURE!

I started learning Spanish, for I simply love this language.

Tried learning Japanese a few years ago, but didn't have the time to focus on, so I stopped after half a year, but I still think it's fascinating. So different...

I know a little Spanish and have taken this course in College a few years back. The reason is because I have family in South America. My uncle, who is my mom's brother has 3 kids who know a little English so it never hurts to know their language too.

I used to speak and write a little French, it was my choice of languages offered at school, and I used it while in Europe - and spoke "restaurant" German when I lived there. I could get my point across but that was about all. Now I remember almost none of it, but it's been 30 years since I've spoken it.

Right now my country is trying to teach me PC, but they are failing miserably.

I speak only English (Canada). I studied French briefly in high school, but didn't see the practical point of it at the time. Now I wish I would have stayed with it!

I wouldn't mind learning another language, but I lack the drive and commitment to make it a priority at this time.

Some french sounds BEAUTIFUL, and some sounds HORRIBLE! I have to say though, I bought a brigit bardot tape once, and it made me PINE for french! But the accent is NOT consistent. English, German, and many other languages are the SAME way.

As for chinese? Did you know the same word can mean bed and window?

It may seem so to speakers of non-tonal languages, but they're different words because they have different tones. Window is said in the first tone (monotone) and bed is pronounced with the second tone (going up in pitch).

Apparently, my English is quite foreign sounding. People always think I'm a foreigner, wherever I am. I think it is due to a mishmash of accents picked up from places I've lived plus a mild speech impediment. I wouldn't get a job as a DJ, anyway

Writing Arabic fonts are not like the other language fonts. We know that most of the language fonts writing starts in the left side of your hand but only the Arabic fonts are starts with right side of your hand. So that, people are facing some problem in the primary level when they are trying to write Arabic language. To find the Arabic language written solution I am trusted https://www.madinaharabic.net/ because they are providing Arabic language learning tuition online and people can get the lesson sitting on their home.
