There have been about 514 Leap years since Caesar created it in 45BC.

Without the extra day every 4 years, today would be July 28, 2013.

The Mayan calendar did NOT account for leap year.

So technically, the world should have ended 7 months ago.

That is all.

Enjoy your day!

How many actual 'end of the world' days have we had in the last ten years? It seems that every year there is some fringe group or news story about the end of the world being iminent.

Yeah, I'd say the worst was Harold Camping. I cant believe that guy was never indicted, or at the VERY least, sued.

People threw away their life savings not once, but twice (that I know of!) I mean come on.. I remember Y2K, everyone was all "OMG the world is gonna end, computers will shoot nukes, blah blah blah.."

    And then nothing happened. LOL

I bet $500,000 that the World doesn't end on Dec 2012.

    Any takers?

Well that was a nice try.......however - the Mayan's perception of time was different from ours. Scientists still don't know exactly what day the calendar is supposed to end on because it's a totally foreign time scale to the one we use which goes by days that have a month and numerical designation.

SO.......guess you might as well just use the REAL scientific reason why the Mayan end of the world day of Dec 12, 2012 isn't the end of the world (other than being a solstice) - because Mayans never predicted it was. Some dudes got spoofed pretty good. LOL.

Want to be a cult leader? Find an obscure ancient document and make sh*t up about what it says about what's gonna happen with everyone if they don't pay attention to the date. There's actually some "religious" leader out there that has a whole following that think they are going to be ascending on that date. Better watch out for those people - never know if the guy is gonna pull a Jim Jones on them or what.

I'm serious about that - enough so that I think it's time for a new thread about it.

Gee, WhosThatG -- I would have figured you were old enough to have seen it on the news. Was it that long ago that people don't remember it?
Anyhow - I made the other thread to address the issue.

So we can go on flaming you for not knowing that the Mayans didn't recognize or record time in the same way we do.:p

Guess it WAS that long ago, then. I suppose if you read the link that Jonathan posted you got a good view of what I just said though. Pretty wild stuff.

Anyhow - the Mayans had such a different sense of time that we do that scientists, as well as surviving Mayans, really don't even know which day the calendar ends on. It's so different they had to use different means to even reference the calendar that from comparisons to ours and a few other ancient ones that use a system where a calendar starts on a specific day every time the cycle starts over (for us, every year). They feel that there is only a few days grace on it either way, but they aren't setting that in stone yet, either. They had a different math system, too, than seen before.

I'm still wondering where the "Mayan Prophecy" originated from. I can see where the idea for it came from and can follow the logic of it, but I've never run across who the original source of the "prophecy" nonsense was. They did as good a job with it as the guys that produced "The Secret" did, though - in fact better. I don't think there's anyone who hasn't heard of it -- unfortunately, nobody seems to go back to the literature about it from the actual archaeologists who discovered and decoded that darned thing. All it takes is a review of their studies to find that the prophecy is more marketing that prophecy. Can't say that one often enough.

I'm sure we're gonna see some really screwed up stuff going on this year - but nothing that the Mayan scriptures and calendars would explain adequately.

Yeah, I definitely think something catastrophic will happen. Perhaps Cali is gonna fall into the ocean..? Who knows.

But I dont think the world is gonna end.
