When Did You First Ride A Horse?

I was very surprised to see a 2-year-old riding a horse. I wouldn't let my toddler do that. Would you?

I would be very nervous letting a young child ride a horse! I suppose if you know both the child and the horse real well ... but still, anything can happen.

If it were my horse at my home, and I trusted the horse from personal experience, I might think about it.

I first rode a horse, I mean the very first time, when I was 6. My dad took me, my older sister and little brother to a riding stable where we each were put on our horses, given very little instruction and sent off. My horse slowly made its way over to a field of Black Eyed Susans, and began to munch as I watched my dad's, my sister's and brother's horse take off in a gallop!

I couldn't get my horse to budge for nothing and was so frustrated, I was on the verge of tears, when my dad came back and got me. He put me on his horse and led my horse back to the stable and asked for help.

It turns out my sister's horse ran all the way over to the fence and jumped right over and off the property! She ended up putting her teeth through her lip with the hard landing and is lucky she stayed on.

My brother was lost and we had to do a search where we found him crying and covered in mud from head to toe trying to figure out the way back. His horse went into a mud bog, reached the center and wouldn't budge. After yelling for help to no avail, he jumped off the horse and into the mud! Yikes!

Boy did my dad get it from my mom when we got home, lol!

Anyway, never, never on a horse that wasn't my own!!

I wouldn't allow it, but I wasn't much older than that when I started riding. I think I was four...on a very well-trained horse, of course. By the time I was 7 or 8 I was breaking wild ponies to ride. Needless to say, I grew up on a horse ranch.

Did you ever create horse-related information product? An equestrian site I haphazardly cobbled together with PLR articles generated nice Adsense income before I flipped the site.

No I haven't. I haven't had any experience with horses in decades. I'm sure I've forgotten most of what I knew, so I'd have to do a lot of research. Still have some trophies to prove I once knew something about riding though, what few survived the fire. I'll bet I could still train a horse though . . . if I could just remember which end is the front.

  • Well, the kid does stay pretty well glued, even when the horse starts to trot and canter, and she is wearing a helmet in an arena, but I can understand your apprehension...2 is a little small -

Good kid's horse and the girl is having a great time.

I was found (according to my Grandfather) sitting crossways on the back of Belgian in the middle of the paddock the summer before I turned three.

Apparently I climbed the wood fence which had a flat board on the top and climbed on the horse when it was near the fence. When found, I was sitting there talking to the horse - and he was grazing on the grass. Gramp said I was happy until he plucked me off - and then I threw a fit. I've always loved riding.

Geez, Audrey - an electric shock in the mouth wasn't great for the horse, either

i dunno if this counts or not, but we allowed our 2 yr old ride a pony.

but we walked next to him the entire time. and had a hand on the bit.

we were more worried about him just jumping off, then falling off, as he likes to jump off, and over everything ...

That is different from letting him ride off on his own on the pony.

Wow. Toddlers are something else. If I turn my head for a brief moment, I'm finding my 22-month-old toddler balancing on one leg on his dino-mobile or tap-dancing on top of a bucket or some other stunt which I have to put an end to before he can fall down and hurt himself.

The thing about horses is they can get startled and throw someone off. We're not willing to risk that with our toddler (though I'm sure he'd be game for it, lol).

I've never really been a horsey person so I'd be very hesitant about letting my 2 year old ride.

I'll never forget when I was on prac work during uni, at an extensive beef cattle farm in western Queensland. I was on this little palomino horse, ready to go out mustering. She was grazing while we waited and her bit touched the electric fence. Well, she was up and off, with me hanging onto the saddle and bouncing around all over the place. One foot out of the stirrup and the other one through...we went over the first fence and through the next two, but I managed to stay on.

We eventually got her settled and went out to muster, but there was no way I was letting her out of a trot!! That scared the living daylights out of me!

    I'm still not a horsey person :-)

There is a BIG difference between 2,3, and 4. I know I did before I was 8, but I don't know exactly. But it WAS a full horse! If I had a two year old do it, they BOTH would have to be well behaved, and on soft ground the horse was comfortable with. OH, and the horse would be a young pony!

I was 5 and I was terrified. My parents wanted me to take riding lessons. The terror kinda put a stop to that. I didn't get on a horse again till I was about 10 at camp. Then and now I wished I hadn't been frightened and had the benefit of good instruction.

Some of our best family friends had a farm. Their names were the Waltons - I kid you not. LMAO. Anyhow - I had climbed on every type of animal on that farm and taken rides when I was 3 and 4. I rode the pigs, the cows, and the horses. I never really had permission, but my parents didn't seem to mind me being around the animals. But then - I've always been kind of a whisperer and nobody with 4 legs ever tried to hurt me. Besides - my parents weren't so protective that they worried about me falling down and whatnot. Back when I was a kid if you got hurt parents would shake their heads and say -- "see? ya gotta be careful" - or they would cart you to the local doctor to fix what ya knocked up.

I've never rode a horse but I have been on a moped.

    Is that close enough?

BTW - that's not a horse, it's a pony. Check out the size of that kid compared to the "horse". Her head would come about to its shoulder if she were standing next to it - which means about waist high to an adult, if that. Those are the little guys you rent for kiddy birthday parties. They are perfect for little tykes. The local vet lived down the road from me and his kid and I used to saddle up and ride the two they had all the time.

I was very young - probably 3-4 years old the first time I rode a horse. It really depends on the horse.

I would agree that it would depend on the horse. I have a crazy stallion, see my avatar.. he is only good for me, he is my boy. However, when he is around little kids, he is the gentlest guy. I can't get him from the stall to the round pen without a swat team and a taser , but if a little one is around, he's a puppy.
