What is the purpose of music?
"Music hath charms to soothe a savage breast, to soften rocks, or bend a knotted oak."
    - William Congreve

    "Music calms the savage beast."
    - Bugs Bunny
Hope one of those works as an answer for you.

    Good question.

For me “music” means sharing knowledge and experience. Empathizing with (and inspiring) a whole range of emotions: Sadness, happiness, sorrow, gratitude, love, etc. When I hear a song that affects me deeply I remember why I decided to compose my own songs for people.

For me, the purpose of music is that it enriches the soul. Many of us don't know how to express our feelings and we can easily convey it through music.

Wow - never really thought about it, I find music soothing or motivating depending on my mood or what I'm trying to accomplish. It also evokes memories and I'm certain it has other purposes but those are the most poignant for me.

There is no overiding purpose to anything. Life is what you make it. It depends entirely on what you want out of life.

If you want to chase nothing but money and personal possessions, to seek respect amongst your peers to show off your flashy lifestyle, in effect saying to all and sundry, hey look at me, look at how great I am, all this proves is how big your ego is. I'd call it self conceit myself.

Really, if this is all you're chasing in life - sooner or later you're going to come banging back down to earth with a bump. Not that of course you're going to show or allow anyone else inside your mind to see your major fears at work. No, you've got to keep up appearances because when you strip all of this away (material wealth and possessions) what is there left of you which has any real value?

You're going to be left only with the age old question as you look at yourself in the mirror when you get old asking yourself, what the hell was all of that about?

Lifes purpose is procreation. Expanding the species. For in numbers, there's safety or so we're led to believe. Or at least the sense of feeling more secure the more of us there are which is why we tend to congregate together in large numbers.

The purpose of life is to have children and to teach them all the lessons in life you can so they don't simply end up repeating your own mistakes. It's all about evolving. Each generation doing better than the last. In a nutshell survival tools.

Breaking this down to a micro level, lifes purpose is about making your family happy. Putting a smile on each others faces. Treating each other with kindness, love and respect. Qualities which sadly seem to be greatly amiss in todays busy world.

If you do have a single life purpose, it is to bring more love and happiness to other people starting first within the home.

What is the purpose of music?

Again, there is no purpose to music. Music is music. Music to the ears. Some might say a gift from the gods. But at the end of the day...

...the purpose which you take from listening to good music is entirely down to you. Who else can say or tell you what the purpose of music is? This is completely subjective as everyone individually interprets music differently.

It is what is, just like life.

Just be being. You are human afterall.

Music is our means of keeping a rhythm when we dance.

It also gives people something to post about in forums. It gives others insights to the posters frame of mind when they just don't have much to say otherwise.

Anything creative needs no purpose other than to exist.

To power wonderful and invigorating creative dance workouts that exercise the body, mind and soul.

Just one purpose out of trillions...

The stated purposes of music will vary just as much as the people who enjoy it.

In the past a lot of music was political or parody or informational or whatever you wanted it to be. But minstrels would put to music and voice what they could not just come out and say without retribution.

Music has no purpose. Nor does fashion, joy, and color. A proper life has no music. Proper people wear plain drab clothes, and live joyless colorless lives. Also it is better to limit one's seating to hard benches rather than anything with cushioning.
