Well, my wife and kids wanted a pet they can play/interact with, and after some analysis we decided to get a pet: NERO. It's a 7 month chinchilla!! He's very friendly, loves to play, eat and sleep.

Anyone else has a chinchilla?

It's a rat! Your kids wanted a pet and you got them a rat? Whatever happened to the cat or the dog man?

      Right on!!

He's with us for a couple days and he's very VERY intelligent and friendly. As usual, we read as much as we can about his nature, habits, etc, so we are highly informed about chins by know. His daily routine (they love routines) includes 1 hour off cage after dinner time to build a good relationship, play with us and have fun!!!

Soon we'll receive the new cage, a supa dupa power house, really big and high, with 3 platforms for him to jump around, and new tunnels and toys.

      Nero's definitely a cutey!

    Very cute.

Aren't they the ones that need to get dirt rubs every day? Or is that an Iguana?

Pet rodents are very sweet. I miss my 3 rats and my bunny (some say bunnies are rodents, some say lagomorphs (mammals)) - when people threaten to eat them I call them rodents, otherwise not.

In any case they are a wonderful addition to any family!

    Have fun with him!

      Thanks!

Just had 1 hour and 15 minutes of fun with Nero, my wife and my kids... Awesome!!!! It's amazing how Nero enjoys to tease us to play and comes to us, we're sitting on the floor and he comes to us, no fear, even to my kids - and it was the first time Nero had this close fun with them How cool is that?

As soon as my wife told him "bath time" he came to her hands to get back to his house, which is fantastic - yesterday I had to wait for 30 minutes for him to came to my hands free will !!! lol

One problem tho: my wife opened Nero's house after his bath to give him some "love" and he just wants to get outside for more fun... What a freaking lunatic!

        im sorry Fernando,

but i see your little friend there, and i cant help thinking,
you need about 50 more to make you wife a nice jacket.

ha , im just kidding, sorta.

chinchilla's are pricy here, enough so, that "farms" are popping up
all over the place... i think they are the new alpaca.

I do hear they make great pets... if your into that sort of thing
im more of a scales and tails type of guy.

    Fernando - get some raisins.
Tell Nero to "shake" - then put your finger under his paw and shake it a little - then give him a raisin. Do that several times a day and your little guy will learn to shake hands - just know that unlike a dog, you have to have treats for the rodent to motivate them. After they know how to shake they will offer the paw whenever they want something. You need to give them something at least half the time or they just won't bother with the trick any more.

My little Ju-ju used to climb up me to get on the poker table and run around to each player holding her paw up - everyone was captivated and gave her something. When her pouches were full she came over to me and had me help her down to the floor and run off to her secret stash drawer. It's really something how much of a little ham a little guy like that becomes when they know people are a sucker for them. LOL.

Lovely! I've had rats in the past, and rodents make great little pets. We don't get Chins here in Aus, but I've been told about how delightful they are.

Have a look at Karen Pryor Clickertraining - it's about how to train lots of different species. They don't mention Chins but the theory is the same.

      Good morning!!

Nero had a proper Saturday night! We could hear him rocking his house for hours... He really gets active during the night.

Hey Ken, we'll probably get him a partner cause they love company, in nature they live in large groups. Over here the prices range from 50 Euros to several hundred Euros: it depends of their breed.

Now that is funny!!! Just proves what most owners say about rodents: they are really special animals... I can only imagine the little guy going around holding her paw up: "got something for me?" :p

We have raisins and some other "sweets" for him, but it seems they can only eat treats like that 2x per week... so we try not to use them that much.

      Hi Audrey,

Yes, chins can be trained using a clicker: I talked about this to my wife and she said something like "I don't want a Ninja/Commando chinchilla". Ahahaha :p But I guess we'll have to teach him some basic commands, like "house" and "kiss" etc etc.
