What irrational childhood fear do you still hold?

In 1979 my parents took me to see the Muppet movie. Still one of my favorites, save for the fact that I was traumatized by the frog-leg merchant's attempt to get Kermit's legs. I got over it...or so I thought.

Fast forward 33 years and I still can't even try one frog leg.

My cousin and her new husband, who is French invited us over for dinner. Sauteed frog legs.

Now generally, I'll try anything once but every time I picked the little sucker up, I just couldn't get my mouth to open. My mind kept replaying Kermit's attempt to save his legs from the merchant. Silly? You bet. Could I help it? Not at all.

I'm glad my kids weren't there or I could forget about ever winning another "just one bite" battle again. I still feel silly, but I wasn't eating that frog leg.

What childhood fear do you still hold as an adult?

I think after seeing Jaws at a young age I'm still somewhat apprehensive about swimming in the ocean.

I still check behind the shower curtain every night before I go to bed...

Silly, I know, but what if the night I decide not to check is the very night
someone is actually hiding there? All those wasted years of checking and
I still end up getting stabbed to death in my bed...

Raising a child is akin to knowing you're getting fired in 18 years and having to train your replacement without actively sabotaging them.

I wouldn't call it an actual "fear" but dolls and puppets (human not animal) still give me hella creeps. Thanks Rod Sterling. Appreciate that one.

  • Well - I still have a fear of Wicked Witches and Flying Monkeys...
But I wouldn't call that IRRATIONAL

I think that my fear of heights stems from childhood.

Whenever we went to the drive-in, my parents wouldn't let me go on the big silver slide, I always had to play on the little blue elephant one with only three little steps, before the movie started.

They explained it was too high and that I could fall off of it and get hurt.

Shortly thereafter, I started having bad dreams of falling off the top of that big silver slide and I would wake up with butterflies in my stomach, gasping for breath and this fear that sent something shooting throughout my limbs making my muscles feel weak. Similar to an adrenaline rush but kind of with nerves involved too.

These are the exact things I feel when I am somewhere high up as an adult!

When we go to amusement parks and get on the tall attractions and rides, I scream and everyone thinks that I'm fun screaming, but I am really scared sh*tless! Sorry, didn't know how else to explain that fear.

But that fear is real and all encompassing!

      Haha!

      I do!

Did I forget to mention that I love it because I find those amusement parks to be the safest way to experience my fear of heights? LOL!

Heights still freak me out a little. But when I'm high up on a mountain for example, I still enjoy looking over the edge. The fear is there, but it's also a rush. And there is a feeling of accomplishment when you face your fear.

Thanks everyone! It's nice to know that I'm not the only one with some holdovers from childhood.

LOL, I still feel funny hanging an arm or a leg over the side of the bed in the dark, at nighttime! On a conscious level, I have it under control - it's not a limiting fear. But there is no question that when I do it, it just doesn't feel right!
