Whew!

I escaped the tornadoes earlier! There was one just north of us, and one to the west and another to the south! I thought they were coming to get me!
I was scared
!

We only got high winds, nonstop thunder, pink and purple lightening and hail.

It's really kind of weird though, because as of late, I have been having dreams where a huge tornado is heading straight for me but I always wake up right before they actually get me.

It's really unnerving and down right creepy, I tell ya.

Don't tell me that considering where you live you don't have a pair of ruby slippers handy? Maybe I'll zip my dad a message and see if he has my old pair at the house. I think they were still there last time I visited. You can have them if he can find them. Just wear your Betty Boop sweater and he'll remember you when he answers the door.

Glad to hear nothing serious happened, Terra. We've been experiencing increasingly worse winds over the past few years, but no tornadoes in our area, fortunately.

We've only really had one tornado in our region since we've been here (31 years). It completely obliterated a relatively new farmhouse. Fortunately, the family was away at the time. I could not believe the utter destruction. I would not wish that on anybody.

Terra lives in Tornado alley, GT. She's about 10 miles from my Dad's house. Last time I went home they had tornadoes the day I got there and again the day I left. The year I was born one ripped through the main street of Flint and wiped out a good chunk of the downtown area (a GM town). Usually they aren't that major, but sometimes.....sometimes it gets dicy. I'm sure when Terra gets back here she can tell at LEAST a few stories about other near misses.

It's not all that stressful, GT. They are hypnotizing to watch - you just have to be ready to take a deep dive if they start to come down. Michigan has excellent warning systems, and although people lose property now and again, they rarely lose lives.

You should come visit me then. Grim Natwick, the creator of Betty Boop, was from here. There's a Betty Boop festival here every year.

            Home (Festival Link)

They have a Betty Boop exhibit at the South Wood County Historical Museum too, but I don't know if it's year round or just around the festival.

              OMGosh Dennis!

You rock! I never knew this existed and I'm only a state away. Thanks!

I have the guest bedroom decorated all things Betty Boop with the bedding and the curtains in pink. But the rest of the wall hangings , music boxes, dolls and knick knacks are a variety of colors.

It keeps my son's college buddies from wanting to crash at our house, Haha!

The granddaughter's love it but I don't think they've quite caught the essence of Betty Boop yet.

Thanks for keeping me grounded last night Sal. Talking to you on the phone kept me distracted from running from door wall to door wall and watching it all.

Before you called, I was out on the deck watching the trees bow over while hubby and son kept telling me to get in the house. They just don't get how hypnotic it actually is to watch a funnel cloud fly over the house! Then again, the times that it happened, they were hiding in the basement, haha!

Anyway, remember when I asked you what that sound was and thought we got disconnected? It was my sister calling on the other line. My niece who lives in Lapeer had one of the tornadoes rip through their backyard. Their house wasn't damaged, but it took out their trees in the back.

That's not their house in the pic, but their neighbor's. Their house is behind them. Thank goodness this was only an F-1!

    Hi Terra.

It's tornado season here in Texas. Coming from Nevada, we only worried about extreme heat and high winds - not tornadoes. It is a terrible feeling.

I'm glued to the tv when we have bad weather and when the alarm sounds and the watches change to warnings, it scares the heck out of me.

Most people here don't have basements. There are no tornado shelters either.

    Glad you're safe.

      Thank you Lori!

As Sal said in an earlier post, the tornadoes here in Michigan are nothing like the ones you see in the South and Plains and rarely cause loss of life. I'm not usually scared of them, but since I had been having those reoccurring dreams of being in a monster tornado's path, I was scared this time.

I can't even imagine living where the big tornadoes hit, that must be extremely frightening!

How terrible for you to have dreams about monster tornadoes. You must be tired from not getting a good night's sleep.

Luckily (?) we are at the bottom of where tornado alley starts. The alley starts in Central Texas, which is north of where we are but we're still in for at least a few warnings and watches every year.

I feel sorry for the people who live in modular homes. As soon as the news comes on to warn about the tornadoes, they suggest that people who live in modulars get out of their homes. How scared those people must be - finding a ditch or someplace safe.

I don't know how people live in Oklahoma and Kansas.

Since we moved here, my kid has become quite the expert on tornadoes. We are "treated" to his recorded - and watched too many times - videos of storm chasers.

Two years ago we had so many watches I wanted to rent a backhoe and dig a hole in the backyard. The husband wasn't thrilled with my idea but I'd much rather be in a hole in the ground than in a house that is not built to withstand the high winds from an F1 much less something higher.

There is so much we can control in our lives. But when it comes to Mother Nature and she strikes, the helpless feeling is something I'll never get used to. As we know, we're at her mercy.

          Lol Lori!

My son is the same way, and we have to suffer through watching the movie "Twister" way too many times. And after last night, guess what's on right now?

Yes, I have seen way too many demolished modular homes around here.

My my dreams are certainly disconcerting and when I get some quiet, down time, I'm going to have to figure out what my subconscious is trying to tell me so those dreams will just shut up! Haha!

Terra, watching the lame stream media now and I had no idea how bad the storms were. So scary, it's hard to watch.

I'm glad you guys are safe.

And noooooooooooooooooooooooooo Twister is not on again! I've probably memorized more than half that movie.

Hey, about that dream of a huge tornado heading straight for you. I'll bet that is your subconscious telling you that you are going to have a helluva windfall of money coming your way soon and you better know how to handle it!

And coffee. I don't start my morning without it. Gotta have my coffee or I'm not a happy camper. My boys understand the momma has to have her coffee. Reminds me of: "You won't like me when I'm angry."

      Now, that I like!

If that's what my dreams mean, well then heck, I'll take a dozen of those monster tornadoes! And I've been planning for awhile and am quite confidant I can handle those finances very responsibly.

Cool! In that case, I hope the next dream has spiders dropping from trees on me while I'm standing in the tornado's path!

      Wait!!

I remember very little of my childhood... but when I was little tornadoes tore through Louisville big time. April 3. Maybe '72?

I have a vivid memory of a recurring dream I had for a couple years...

A tornado is coming, and I try to run, but my shoes come off and I trip, and while I'm flailing around trying to get up, the tornado arrives, and... pauses... inside a set of velvet ropes like they used at the bank, but it was still spinning, and had arms and hands holding a hand written sign. But I don't remember what the sign said, maybe "I'm a tornado". lol

Last year we had a string of REALLY bad storms.. it got to the point where I pulled the mattress into the hallway & laid under it with my dog.

I love thunderstorms, but when there is LITERALLY a water funnel being sucked out of my pool & into the air, the fun is over. We got SOOOOOOOOOO lucky tho man.. the mini-tornado somehow jumped over our house. Our neighbors had shingles torn off their roof, my girl's dad's roof caved in, the entire city was without power for 3 days..

Man, stuff like that just isnt cool.. lol but I'm glad you're OK

Once when I lived in Michigan I fell asleep on my couch. A tornado touched down in the field next to me. The noise (if you've ever been near a tornado, you know the noise they make) woke me up just in time to roll off the couch onto the floor with my arms over my head. The windows exploded about that same time. The tornado bounced and hit a house down the road.

That was my closest encounter with a twister out of all those years I spent watching them go over out there. It was as close as I ever want to come to one while I'm above ground, too.

      Thanks WTG!

I think part of the reason I am so mesmerized by tornadoes is that when I was little, mom was driving down Joslyn Rd, just down the street from where I live now, and my little brother cried out Train! Train! He had a fascination with trains at the time. But whoops! We weren't near the tracks.

Anyway, right then, mom pulled over, got out of the car and pulled my sister, brother and me out and we rolled down into a drainage ditch. Mom laid over the top of us as the tornado barreled by.

For a long time after the noise was gone, she wouldn't let us get up. When she finally did, we saw houses and a huge barn with no roofs left, trees down, lines down and junk strewn everywhere, but we were okay, just muddy as heck!

I remember being mad that mom wouldn't let me see it. Dumb, I know but I was just a little kid. My sister and brother were scared and crying, but I was just mad.

Anyway, I've always wanted to see one after that. It just doesn't seem fair to have been in one and not have seen it. I've seen many a funnel cloud blow over, but never a touch down. Call me crazy, but I just want to see one and then run for cover, lol!

Terra - I'm thinking that anyone that grew up in our part of the country has similar stories about twisters. I've seen them from a distance, but never saw the ones that came close - too busy ducking and covering. Tornado chasers absolutely amaze me. I'd love to be in the car with them sometime.

I think the most afraid I ever was as a young kid was when a wind storm hit Boulder Colorado. It wasn't a tornado, but straight winds of 126 MPH. Our old wood house was creaking and cracking and the wind was howling. I don't know how the house made it through, but it did.

Kurt - there was a windstorm like that back in 1992, out in Central City and Empire area. Didn't that hit you? I know some skiers were killed by a flying ski shack. Power lines fell, you name it, it was fierce. I was driving a shuttle that night and there was so much stuff in the air it looked like the beginning of the Wizard of Oz.

I don't think I was in CO in 1992...But we do get a lot of high wind storms here. I don't think may people realize how windy it can get at the top of the World.

We had a pretty good wind storm a few months ago...80-85 MPH. But the place I live at now is brick and cinder block, so it doesn't have the same sound "effects" that old wood house had.

But I still get a kick out of the local weathermen giving "small dog warnings", advising people not to let their small pets out or they may get blown away.

I'm glad you are safe, Terra. I've seen a few tornadoes just west of us. Yes, around London, Ontario and going north to north east - Canada's tornado alley...eek!

where I am is relatively safe, as the Welland Canal acts like a sort of buffer for some of these storm systems, and very often storms will pass right over us and stop in St. Catharines.

Okay, now how bizarre is this?

I got a call from my brother in Missouri today telling me he had a dream that I was sucked up in a huge tornado. He told me he was holding onto me tightly, but he lost his grip and poof, I was gone. He said he kept shaking his fist at it demanding it give me back, but it then just ascended back up and was gone along with me.

I like the idea that me dreaming about tornadoes means money and good luck, but I'm not sure if I like the idea of someone else dreaming it. At least in my dreams, I wake up before the tornado gets to me!

Anyone have any ideas on this?

Terra - first off, let me clarify that the book I read that "interpretation" was not what I would consider an "authoritative" book on dreams. It was pretty silly actually. I brought it up only in jest.

Second - Your brother probably just heard about the storms and it entered his subconscious. He might have been a tad worried about you. Either that or you have a bit of a psychic link. Those aren't unusual between close family members. I highly doubt that his dreams about you in a tornado had any link to your DREAMS about tornadoes.

Still probably a little spooky to hear him tell you about it though, by all means.

have to worry about it being buried by 2 feet of snow.

Glad you're okay Terra. Tornadoes would just scare the living crap out of me
          if one hit here.

          Yeah Sal,

I didn't take the interpretation seriously at all, it was just something fun to talk about in the midst of seriousness. You know, it carries about the same weight as a bubble gum wrapper fortune, haha!

As for my brother's dream, that was extremely disconcerting and you're right, we're very close and have been on "the same wave length" so to speak, entirely too many times to count.

I just want to figure out what my subconscious is trying to tell me so the tornado dreams will stop. Hmmm, come to think of it, I haven't had another since the storms hit.

          I'm good!

In that case they may have been premonitions. That happens more than people realize. Considering Einsteins theories on time and quantum physics of today, premonitions make a lot of sense. Most of those dreams are oddly vivid.

I had a dream once - not premonition, but disconcerting, that my grandmother was on a beach (she was already dead for years when I had this one) and a huge wave came in and covered her. She was gone when it receded. I'm thinking it might have just been a time that I was missing her. It never made total sense to me in any other light. My grandparents had moved to Florida when I was young so we always went seashell hunting at the beach when I went to see her, so the setting was not odd at all. The dream was just as vivid as a premonition. It was just a very upsetting dream for me that I've remembered for decades. Not much else to think about it now. It was one of them that perked my interest in studying dreams, though.

Wow! Thanks Sal, that makes sense especially when thinking that I always awoke from the dreams before the tornado got me and in the storms that recently struck the area, even though the tornadoes were surrounding me, I wasn't effected!

      That's way too cool!
