What did you want to become growing up?

As kids we always had this dream of becoming "someone" someday. Me, I always wanted to become a teacher. Teaching, they say, is the noblest of all professions. It pays little, yet, the influence of the teachers on her/his students is tremendous and life-changing.

What about you, what did you want to be when you were young? Did it ever materialize? If it didn't, why not?

I wanted to become many things in different stages of my childhood.

The first I recall is wanting to be a mommy. Check

Next it was a singer. Never going to happen!

Next it was a veterinarian. I found out I didn't have the stomach for it when our vet allowed me to stand in as he did an autopsy on a dog.

Next it was an actress, check...did a stint of that when I was younger.

Next it was to be a writer and author. Check

I accomplished some of them anyway.

mainly I wanted to be an adult. Wow - was THAT over-rated!

I always wanted to be a scientist. I changed types of science I wanted to go into now and again - astronomy, archaeology, paleontology -- but I always wanted to be in earth sciences. Some things never change.

Yeah. I was at a customer one time that had funny artwork with some statements. One said something like "We spend half our life hoping we are older, and the other half hoping we are younger".

When I was younger I wanted to become a Catholic priest or a herpetologist.

My parents used to tell me when I was a child that I'd make a good engineer someday because I was good at building things out of LEGOS. I just could not understand what building things out of LEGOS had to do with driving a train?!!?

Natural disaster aid - logistics. Getting the aid through to where it's most needed. Still my dream job now all these years later.

Failing that, a Trinity House lighthouse keeper comes a very close second.

Can't think of much better occupation especially in a storm like this one 100 miles to the south of me on the other side of the English Channel...

Maybe this is why I never really become much of anything. I wanted to do so
many things in my life it's a miracle I didn't end up on the street.

Growing up, I wanted to be

      A sportscaster
      A disc jockey
      A novelist
      A songwriter
      A magician
      An actor
      A rock star
      A school teacher
      A baseball player
      A professional chess player
      A sitcom writer
      A TV drama writer
      A voice-over for commercials
      A concert pianist
      A Broadway show writer
      A stand up comic
      A stand up comedy writer
      A professional gambler
      A soap opera script writer

Of that whole list, the only thing I ever did for pay was when I taught at
a business school for a couple of years back in the 80s.

Most of the list, I never even came close to doing and the few things I have
done were for my own enjoyment and nothing else.

      Some highlights:

As a kid, did magic shows for a couple of parties. Didn't get paid for either and
at the one, I messed up one of the tricks. My mom was my assistant, God
      rest her soul.

Made my own home DJ tapes announcing songs and doing my Dan Ingram
impersonation. This was back in the early 70s on cassette tapes.

Wrote about 900 songs. Submitted many to publishers. Had one published
and one professional demo made. No income from any of this though.

Played drums in a rock band in the 80s for a brief stint. Did mostly weddings
but also played in bars. That's when I learned to drink, something I wish I
never started. Fortunately, I stopped very shortly after and have been dry
      for about 30 years.

Learned to gamble from a professional gambler and took that knowledge to
AC and made a few bucks. Nothing earth shattering, but I did come out
      ahead.

Wrote a few soap scripts for the University of Miami. Got the gig because my
dad knew the drama coach. They made a few tapes and sent me one. I have
since lost it and have no idea where it is. The acting was pretty bad so no
great loss. This was in the 80s.

Being an Internet marketer was the last thing I ever wanted to or thought of
doing. Maybe that's why, after 9 years, I'm trying to pack it in.

If I had to choose just one of those things on my list and was told I could
finally get to do it professionally, at this point in my life, I don't know what
I'd choose. I'm kind of burnt out writing tunes and most of the rest of that
stuff, I just have no interest in anymore.

These days, I enjoy playing MTG with my friends.

      Tomorrow, who knows?

I guess some things never change.

Growing up, I initially wanted to become an educator because most of my relatives were educators themselves. When I was in High School, I learned that I could write a bit and fell in love with journalism. I became a reporter and a writer after college and then became a one-time teacher. So, everything I wanted, I was able to accomplish.

I remember the first time anyone asked me what I wanted to be. It was my dad. I was really young. But I knew. I said I wanted to be an ice cream man like Mario. Mario had the local ice cream route selling popsicles, ice cream sandwiches and all the rest. There was a playground down the street from my house and Mario would stop there every afternoon and all the kids would gather around and drool.

He had one of those old stainless steel change slot thingies on his belt loaded up with quarters, nickles, dimes and half dollars. I used to think he was really special because he had the two most important things in life. Pocket money and ice cream.

In the third grade the teacher made us all stand one at a time and tell the class what we wanted to be. There were about 15 kids in front of me. While I waited my turn I had no idea what I was going to say. When my turn came I stood and just sort of blurted out, "Writer."

The class kinda snickered because I was not any kind of student in those days and writer didn't seem to fit the character. The teacher was a bit surprised too and commented that my choice was interesting and then asked why a writer.

Not one to pass up a such a great straight line I told her that I wanted to write because it wasn't real work. All you do is sit all day and write stuff. My rationale was that my dad drove a truck and most of my friends' dads also did physical labor. The teacher just rolled her eyes and groaned. I guess I planted a seed that day that took.
