I took these quick videos just a couple of hours ago...It's been very warm here for the past 3 weeks and the elk are starting to come. In the next month or so, the herds will get bigger and bigger as rutting season gets closer.

The first shot was taken about 20 feet from my front door. The big white building across the valley is The Stanley Hotel, famous for being the place were Steven King wrote The Shining. It was built by FO Stanley, inventor of the Stanley Steamer.

In a couple of the shots of the elk, I was within 15 feet of them.

For some reason, the forum didn't embed the video in the OP.

      Wow! Look at them all!

And they don't seem to be bothered by the traffic near by either.

Do they ever come into your yard and eat your flowers like the deer around here?

Yeah...All the time. There was a big male in the yard just yesterday passing through.

As far as traffic, the elk are very acclimated. I swear I've seen a few of them literally look both ways before crossing the street. I know people think I'm crazy, but I've seen them do it, I'm just not 100% positive they are looking for traffic, but it sure looks like it to me.

It wouldn't surprise me a bit if they were indeed looking both ways for traffic. There's a big old buck with a huge rack on him around my parts and I've seen him wait for traffic to pass before stepping out onto the road.

He's an old guy and has been around for quite awhile. I'm convinced he has grown to his ripe old age by being smart enough to do just that.

Lots of elk. Do you live on the edge of town? Kind of looks like it from that first shot. We used to get a lot of wildlife in our yard when we lived on the edge of town.

I kind of live towards the edge of town...But the pictures of the elk are close to the center of town. The town is small, so only about a mile from from home.

In about another month, the elk will rut and there will be a couple of herds of 50-100 elk each roaming town.

Wow! Are the males dangerous when they're rutting, like deer? Seems like one or two people get gored badly or even killed around here every year when they come across a crazed buck.

In my OP I posted I was about 15 feet away from the elk in a couple of shots...Let's just say if they were males and it was rutting season, I wouldn't have gotten out of the truck.

My town is famous for Elk...They are a major tourist attraction. Here's some other videos that I've posted before. (I didn't take these videos, obviously LOL)

That's what I figured. Kind of strange to see so many wandering around town like they own the place. We're those last two videos shot in your town?

Where do you live anyway? I've got relatives in CO Springs. Or used to, lost track of them. They used to own a riding stable there. Got a friend in Denver and another in Rocky Ford.

Yeah...It looks like 90% of the other 2 videos were shot within about a half mile radius of where I shot my video. Some of those videos were the same place...I shot most of the elk right by one of the golf courses. The elk really love the golf course grass.

I live in Estes Park (South Park?), which is a mountain tourist town about 80 miles NE of Denver. It has a population of about 10,000 during the winter and double that during the summer, not counting elk.

BTW, the elk do own the place.

    This is so cool!

When I read " first shot was taken about 20 feet from my front door" I thought the video was going to be an elk snuff film.

    I'm glad that it wasn't.

Truly awesome, Kurt! We don't have wild elk in our area, but we have lots of deer - both white-tail and mule deer.

Around our house, we typically only see the white-tail deer. They feed off the sunflower seeds from our bird feeders just a few feet away from our kitchen window.

They will watch us through the window like we are zoo animals, lol. We can wave, make faces, jump around, but as long as we stay in our cage, they just ignore us. If we touch the door knob to try to get a closer look at them, they're gone like a shot!

We have deer here too, just not as many as we have elk. They seem to get along pretty well together.

The deer are a lot more "flighty" and less tolerant of people getting close than the elk.

There's also a mountain lion (puma, cougar) that lives up the hill. I've never seen it, but neighbors have. Last year there was a deer bleeding from what looked to be huge claw marks. We guess that it was the mountain lion and the deer got away.

We'll also see some black bears once or twice on average in the yard. It's funny, the neighbors have a dog that never barks...Except at bears and coyotes.
