I didn't know where to post this so I guessed here is as good as any.

For the past few days I've noticed a marked increase in new members spamming in threads, they don't bring anything of value to the thread and generally just agree with the OP or the majority of other posters. Sometimes their messages are even completely out of context and frankly quite bizarre. And on occasion even copying/pasting bits of other posters comments and passingthem off as their own .

Now, I think they're doing this for one of 2 reasons:
1. To get their post count up asap - But for what end? To PM?, big deal!
2. To broadcast their sig.

I was always proud of the fact that WF was pretty much spam free and we have the excellent mods to thank for that but I hope I'm not seeing what will become a bigger problem.

Ok, Rant over.
Thanks for reading
Sev

Well, at the bottom of every post on the left hand side there is a little red triangle. That gives you the ability to report the post to the Mods.
When you see SPAM, use it. After a few people do the same, the post is gone, and if the same person gets too many reports, they are gone(as in banned).
You might want to reread the forum rules, as it explains we are a self moderated forum.

This has been going on for years, and it's nothing new at the WF. The difference here is that enough of us take the "member moderator" idea seriously that posts like you describe get reported and deleted with regularity. That makes it seem like it's spam free around here, but it not.

You can help keep the spammers and crud out by reporting spam posts and spam threads. That little red triangle with the exclamation mark in it is where you click to report a post. The post will be automatically identified when the report page opens, so all you have to do is type "spam" or whatever your reporting the post for, click submit and you're done. You've helped the forum, maybe got a little satisfaction from reporting a spammer, and can go on about your business knowing you're one of the good guys.

Edit: I see Kim beat me to the punch. They don't call him "Old Lightning Fingers" for nothing.

Just when you think you've got it all figured out, someone changes the rules.

Thanks both of you for the info, never noticed that little icon before, too busy reading threads I guess

Anyway, went back to do the deed and hey presto - they're gone, someone beat me to it.

      Cheers

        Honest opinion on this issue?

The forum needs more moderators in different timezones. There's been a massive influx of new members during the past couple of years. And many of them are now trying to bend the rules every which way possible to get more backlinks to their websites. Whether in the form of signature link spam or actual posts.

With a forum this size it needs more than a handful of moderators, who bless them, must spend half their waking hours deleting or moving posts around. And they've got businesses to run too.

Indeed, they make a massive time sacrifice doing what they do to keep this place running as smoothly as possible. But sooner or later as the membership number increases it needs more trustworthy impartial moderators working to keep things as much as possible on an even par.

Yes we're all moderators, yes we can report posts but lately even I've stopped doing this so much weighing up in my own mind the sheer number of posts I report compared to the time availability I know these moderators have, who have the power to delete threads and posts or to move them to the appropriate section of the forum.

It beats me for example... why so many people think the Main Internet Marketing Forum, where one is supposed to discuss money making strategies these days is just filled often with threads started which have nothing to do with the subject.

Oh an SEO thread, who cares they reason, I can't be bothered to post this in the appropriate section, I'll just whack it in here never mind the fact there's a dedicated SEO forum.

        And that's just one example.

The forum definitely needs at least another 20+ trustworthy trainee moderators, people who are genuinely interested in this place and keeping everything as clean as possible for everyone's ultimate benefit. (This is not a criticism Paul, just an observation and some friendly advice - I know you'll be reading this sooner or later).

It needs more mods working 24/7 around the clock. After you guys go to bed which typically looksto me, give or take, around 5am in the morning UK time - out come the spammers in force. You report a thread during the next 3-5 hours and guaranteed pretty much hours after reporting it, it'll still be there in some instances a few hours later.

Of course you (mods) need your beauty sleep. But this gap and I'm sure there are others need to be filled by other members of good repute who can take over this 'shift' to keep the spammers as much as possible at bay.

It's like a tree... the bigger the tree grows the more water it needs to maintain the growth and overall health of the tree. If one just waters it with the same amount as when it was a sapling, in time the trees overall health is affected adversely.

The way I see it, you've got more than enough highly trustworthy potential moderators here to take on this role voluntarily. Members who have been here for a long time. Members who would be willing to be trained for the role so they know the score what's expected of them. And members who would act with absolute impartiality at all times to be fair to everyone.

We all want to see this forum grow and the quality of the forum increase in value rather than decrease.

I hope you don't mind me coming out with these thoughts on the issue and see this suggestion in the manner intended. Just trying to be helpful.

        Kindest regards,

Great post Mark, I also seem to be spending more time reporting, like you say the sheer number of members is making it difficult to control.

This trend seems to be gaining momentum, the first page on the Main Forum is often filled with topics that have nothing to do with making money.

I have no idea how many Mods there are currently but whoever is on duty reacts quite speedily to reports about spam, advertising etc.
It's a thankless job i'm sure, with so many members and posts to police you are not going to make everyone happy all of the time.

Third (and hopefully last) Edit: I kind of agree with Mark. Sometimes it seem these spammers are actually using low access hours to drop their siglinks.
