NASA & Other Space Related News Here...

Ever since POTUS #34 Ike founded NASA in 1958...

It's simply amazing the effect the space agency has had on our normal everyday lives.

Here's a colorful PDF detailing spinoffs by space mission - if you're interested.

http://www.sti.nasa.gov/tto/Spinoff2...imeline_08.pdf

Here's a link to all things NASA spinoffs etc. - with over 1,600 NASA-derived technologies profiled.

I'd be more impressed if they didn't littler space with all that junk.
Sorry but I'm not impressed when we destroy the planet and littler space in the name of progress.

The space litter is not what's destroying the planet Thom.

I'm sure it's not helping any.
How many reports where there last year of space junk falling to earth.
Doesn't matter if you're littering the earth or the sky. Littler is litter and it shows a total disrespect for nature, all for the advancement of man.
So we've turned the earth into a garbage dump and we've turned space into a garbage dump. Only difference is the space junk is "out of sight, out of mind".
I got to add it's mankind that is destroying the planet, so how is mankind destroying space any better.

            So...

In your opinion should we stop the space program altogether or something like that??

Should we have not gone up in space in the first place?

Do our present budget probs tell us to cool it for now or something like that?

Should we get that junk cleaned up before we continue anymore space stuff??

              That what I bolded
I think the space program would be a good thing if they didn't leave junk everywhere they went.
That's really my only issue with it.
Sure some great advancements have come from it, but at what price?
As a human I'm embarrassed by the way we just trash everything we come in contact with.
I laugh when I see those $500 fine for littering signs up all over the place.
It's a crime if we litter, it's advancement when governments do it.

            Happy to be of service.

            Prudent:

1: wise or judicious in practical affairs; sagacious; discreet or circumspect; sober.

2: careful in providing for the future; provident: a prudent decision.

I guess we should also stop funding or even get rid of the Hubble even though it allows us to see far off stuff like asteroids and maybe alien fleets coming our way.

              Love the logic.
So you think because I don't believe we should be littering space with more junk just because China and Russia is, we shouldn't explore space at all?
TL you should know by now I don't fall for those tactics.
You should also know I don't care if Russia or China has a bigger space program then us.
I stopped playing the "who has the biggest willie game" back in grade school.
I know what the word prudent means.
I think the word you where looking for is ego.
If we where prudent in our space program, we wouldn't have left all that junk out there.

That info was FYI since I'll go out on a limb and say you probably didn't know that was the case - that we're not the only country littering space.

    Two questions:

Should we abandon our space program???

    And...

Can we at least keep the Hubble operational??

You see TL I have a problem with humans trashing everything and leaving trash where ever they go, be it on land, sea, or space.
That is my issue with the space program from any country.
You seem to think leaving garbage everywhere is fine as long as there are 'advancements' to be made.
      I say that is irresponsible.

Well you keep ignoring the litter problem, what else would I think?
All I've been saying is stop the space littering, yet you continue to think I don't want any space program at all.
As for the Hubble, I replied.
          Is the Hubble littering space?
I didn't say it should be shut down. I questioned how much litter it is producing. To my knowledge it isn't leaving any litter out there.
So if that is the case then keep it going.
If it is leaving litter everywhere it goes, then shut it down till the litter problem is fixed.
Same with our space program or any other countries space program. Shut them down till they can do it in a responsible manner.

Last year there where how many reports of space junk falling back to earth?
What happens when the bigger pieces that don't burn up upon re-entry start falling?

People are all up in arms over global warming or climate change.
What will happen when there is so much garbage surrounding earth that the sun can't shine through?

Last year there where how many reports of space junk falling back to earth?
What happens when the bigger pieces that don't burn up upon re-entry start falling?

Don't you think we should be taking care of that problem first?

Don't you think we should stop contributing to that problem?

Since the space junk is no where near preventing the sun from shinning through like normal...

I'd rather us work on both at the same time.

            1: Cleaning up the junk.

            2: Continuing the space program.

That seems to be the prudent course of action IMHO.

              There's where we somewhat agree.
You need to continue the space program if you want to clean the junk up.
As for the junk not near to blocking out the sun.
I'm pretty sure that was the same mind set with polluting on earth.
Back 50 or 100 years people didn't think they where producing enough garbage or pollution for it to be a problem.
              Look where we are now.

Should we abandon our space program???

      And...

Can we at least keep the Hubble operational??

On my way into NYC Friday morn, after I exited the Lincoln tunnel, I actually saw, in person, the space shuttle Enterprise on a the back of a specially designed plane...

... on it's tour of NYC before it landed at JFK.

It was a sight to behold.

    WOW!

They have to continue the space program. I wanna see those holograms of Aliens that the illuminati are supposed to run to scare everyone into a one world religion .

I agree Thom - we need to stop junking things up - no matter where we are junking things up. I don't see debris being a climate issue - but get enough matter in orbit and it can mess with earth's tilt or orbit. That could just be plain planetary death. Period.

I shudder to think that they are actually thinking about colonizing other planets with humans. WTF? Trash one place than leave it and go overpopulate another planet and trash it out, too? If there is intelligent life out there and they are watching - we're screwed if we start to go where intelligence exists that's actually intelligent enough not to pollute themselves to death.

I can see it turning into one. Even if it doesn't trashing a place weather it's space, a camp ground, or a city street is ignorant plain and simple.

    Are these really space sounds???

The complex interactions of the cosmic plasma of the universe, charged electromagnetic particles from the solar wind, planetary magnetosphere, rings and moons create vibration soundscapes which are at once utterly alien and deeply familiar to the ear.

    We landed Curiosity on Mars!

NASA's Curiosity rover landed on Mars in a daredevil maneuver that used a rocket-powered sky crane to lower the 1-ton robot safely to the Martian surface after plunging through the planet's atmosphere.

Never before had the maneuver been attempted and, by all accounts, it was a spectacular success.

How NASA tests an against-all-odds Mars rover landing:

The space agency had dubbed Curiosity's imminent landing "seven minutes of terror."

And that's even after months of excruciating, exacting preparation.
