I lost my last grandparent

Tonight I found out my grandmother died. She went into a coma this morning. I went to see her at hospice a while then came back home. Then I got a call not long ago that she passed on.

Not trying to gain any sympathy, but there's several people here that I see as good friends, so just thought I'd post.

Sorry to hear that, kid. Glad you were able to visit.

Even when we know the loss was natural because it was a loved one's time to go - it leaves a hole in the history of who we are.

Dear April: I don't want any trouble from you.
January was long, February was iffy, March was a freaking dumpster fire.
So sit down, be quiet, and don't touch anything.

I'm sorry to hear that Valerie. Whenever that has happened to me, I try to think that they are ahead of us in this race. That gives me some kind of comfort. Plus I talk to my friends and relatives and we also try to concentrate on celebrating this person's life and accomplishments. Maybe doing the same could help you somewhat.

I have one grandmother still living (97 yrs old) and I 've always considered her to be a great source of strength and grace for our family and now that she lives further away I'm lucky if I get to see her once a year. It is so wonderful that you were able to spend time with your grandmother before she passed away. If you believe (as I do) that the soul is eternal then remember she will always be with you, just not in physical body. I'm sure you have many great memories that you were able to share with her and that you can lovingly celebrate her life with. My prayers and thoughts are with you and your family.

Keeping it together okay, Val? I am sorry you have to go through the grief. You are so fortunate to have had a grandparent who was part of your life live so long that your children got to know her and got to hear family history from one who lived it. Live full so that you have something to talk about when you see her on the other side again.

    Thanks everyone
I teared up, but I haven't been sobbing with grief.
It helps to believe the soul is eternal. Otherwise life would be utterly depressing and I would need major tranquilizers just to get through day by day. It helps to believe there is something better after this life that we pass on to.

I'm sorry to hear about this Valerie. It sucks to see someone we love so much finally go.

Its hard to think of how that must have been.

Its helped me to know that things happen, and I believe in a higher place where all go to be happy.

You are not allowed to grieve the loss unless you also celebrate the life.

That's Tom's rule. By the time you get to my age you will have celebrated

a lot of lives. It will one day occur to you that time isn't a straight line, its

a circle that completes. Hang tough, Sweetie, glad you were up for sharing

    with your friends.

Condolences to you for your loss.

We are all on a journey; she just completed this portion of it sooner than we did. I believe our soul is eternal; our body a vehicle for this journey.

A doctor once said to me, "We are all higher Spirits, just having a human experience."

Grief is a tool that allows you to move forward.

Celebrate your grandmother's life and the fond memories that you have.

You will be in my prayers.

Valerie - I am sorry to hear you lost your G-ma. I am really glad you got to see her one last time. You will see her again someday.

From what I can surmise grandparents are great (and sometimes preferable to parents) because they can just give you love and don't need to be the policeman.

I never knew any of my 4 grandparents because 2 died before I was born and we moved away when I was 3 years old (2 remaining only spoke Italian so forget any communication at all).

I can see though with my son, G-ma is his BF (my mother who was to me the SS). (Nazis)

Your G-Ma and all of us are with you in spirit always.

    Hi, Valerie,
One of the lessons I learned with the death of my first wife was that there was no need to weep for her - but - oh boy - did I need to weep for ME!
I truly believe that the dead are in a better place but have no idea where or what it is. I also have experienced, on many occasions, the absolute knowledge that she and the others I have lost are not so distant from me.
I suppose I am more emotional than most men but I certainly am grateful for that fact because, while grief is deep, it is short lived - as I hope you soon discover.
Throughout my long illness I have had much support from all my family - both the living and the dead - so, no matter what your personal beliefs, remember that what has happened is only in the natural order of things but, instead of seperating you, it could bring you closer together.

        Sorry for your lose Val.
Even when they have had a long life it is still hard on those who love them.
It was 7 years ago today I lost my wife to cancer so I do understand your grief.
Like Tom said you have to celebrate their life.
Also understand that your grandmother will live on in your heart.

I feel for you Valerie. My grandmother died of cancer last year of May, me and my relatives took care of her personally and sadly she died in front of my eyes. Somehow the pain still resurfaces but I also try to counter act by thinking about how she lived, and not how she died. Remember, what doesn't kill you only makes you stronger.

    Hugs,
    Janice
