Losing a Pet sucks big time!

Sadly the old (15 yrs) kitty that inspired me to post the Cat vs Dogs clip has passed on.

Odie girl AKA Granny stopped eating Monday night and I had to have her put to sleep yesterday. . She'd been suffering with Feline kidney disease for the past 6 years and I guess she'd had enough. She went from her usual slender 6lbs to a scrawny 2.9 lbs in two days and completely stopped responding. When I came downstairs Wed. morning she'd managed to crawl to her favorite sunny spot but she couldn't even lift her head when I called. There was nothing left to do but let go.

I've never had a pet put to sleep before but I stayed with her until the end. Man that was hard. I got her and her brother January 1997 and found out Odie girl was blind around 1998 but sight or no sight she was feisty and very bossy.

I feel like I've been punched in the chest. I've had that cat longer than my kids, marriage and my first website but Odie girl lived a good life and she will be remembered. That's all any of us can ask for when our time comes. Whether we have 2 legs or 4.

When I returned from the vet, my kids had organized an impromptu memorial service, complete with a version of "You've got a friend in me" from Toy Story and I lost it.

It was the perfect goodbye for Odie Girl, I couldn't have asked for more. Plus my oldest may just give Randy Newman a run for his money, he didn't sound too bad.

So I dedicate Randy Newman's You've got a Friend in me to my Odie Girl and all the other pets that have moved on from our lives but not our hearts.

I am so sorry for your loss.

Thanks for sharing it with us.

I am sitting here trying not to cry about two total strangers but the way you articulated this is making it very hard not to.

God bless you and your family for giving Odie a prime spot in your lives for all these years and for giving her a good life.

There will be a void where she was for a while, and she will always be in your heart.

    RIP Odie.

      RIP Odie.
Thank you, I think the Randy Newman song cinched it. I thought I was going to be OK because Odie has been sick for awhile but that song.... It's just perfect for a lost pet. My eyes water every time I think about it.

Odie's brother, Clyde AKA Fatboy has just been pacing around the house looking for her. So sad.

awwww - poor Fatboy too - i know it is probably too soon to even think about but any chance of a new little friend for him someday? nothing like a little pest baby to take everybody's attention off the blank space where Odie was.

i am not listening to that song though. that will take me over the top the way songs do. i hate going around with my eyes all puffy.

The way I feel today, I'll never get another pet. Fatboy's it.
However, I'm a softy. So maybe I'll change my mind if I meet the right fur ball.

Sorry to hear of your loss, Halcyon. Our "pets" are just as much a part of our family as their two-legged counterparts. It always hurts to see them go.

So sorry to hear about your loss. It's such a difficult time.

My best friend Nikki died after 17 years. It took me years to talk about her without crying. And now, a decade+ later, it's still difficult.

    They are our best friends.

We have Rita and Milo. Rita is a pound rescue (dog) and Milo, well, he's a dog we agreed to babysit but the owners never came back to get him.

A good friend of my husband's was killed in a car wreck. He was to young to die.

    The widow was devastated.

She asked us to babysit her dog because she had to get out of town. Totally understandable. However, she called six weeks later to tell us she wasn't coming back.

I asked her if I could I could bring Milo to her (Texas to Arizona and I swear I would have made that road trip in a heart beat) but she said she could have a friend stop by to take him to the vet to have him put to sleep. I'm thinking WTH? Put to sleep? Ah, we don't do that.

We have a new addition to the family. Albeit not one I wanted, but I love him dearly (darn it!).

I am sorry for you. I know what a heartbreak it is to have our friends pass.

I'll bet Granny had a good life thanks to you and your family. You're one strong woman to be with her too.

Your kids are awesome. Wanting to do something that makes momma happy. What a blessing.

    Sorry Halcyon.

I had a cat (“Angus”) who was my companion since I was a baby. He even used to bathe my head/hair. He lasted until 20 and I never got a chance to say goodbye. : ( It’s sad that they’re gone, but it’s good that we had them. : )

    Hey Halcyon'
I'm not a cat person, but I am deeply sorry for your loss.
At one point we had 4 dogs. They are all gone now.
Pets can be like children. And, ours were.

One was very special. The most incredible dog I've ever know.
And, although I loved them all, 1 was my best friend.
I was on the road when my step-daughter took him in to be put down.
He was in Kidney and she called to ask me if that's what I wanted.
    I said yes.
Then, I pulled into an empty parking lot and balled like a baby.
It was all I could do to finish my day.

As time passes the pain will lessen.
I think you should get another cat.
It will never replace 'Granny' but I believe it ease the pain.

      Halcyon,

I want you to know that I understand your pain and my heart goes out to you.

I bypassed this thread several times today because I wanted to share with you some stories of Max, the greatest cat we ever had who has passed, but every time I thought about them, I got all choked up.

He grew up with my kids and was considered one of them.

I still can't share them, I'm getting all teary eyed, but I wanted you to know that I totally understand.

So sorry for your loss. Pets really are family.

We bought a dog for my oldest boy when he was in pre-school. My son is now getting ready to head off for college, and we know that our dog doesn't have too much time left. Not looking forward to what will likely be the worst year of my life.

And by the way, that Toy Story song did me in.

I thank you all for your kind words, I really appreciate it. It's nice to know that I'm not alone.

Although I feel like boo boo pushed through a strainer, I know that I was fortunate to have her for so long and to still have her brother Fatboy.

It's the little things I noticed today. Like it was the first day in 15 years I didn't say "Good Morning Granny" I called her Granny because her meow sounded like an old lady's "heh?", she was blind, grey and always curled up near a heat source.

I'm sure it did. My boys hit the nail on the head with that song but I don't think I'll be able to watch Toy Story for a while.

Losing a loved animal is always hard and I do feel for you. I believe you got the love from her she had and she needed to move on.

I had a cat with cancer and I still have her 2 boys almost 13 now... I know they will soon have to go (going to make myself cry) but they are still really healthy. Anyway, we had surgery done on her to remove it and within 6 months she was just full of lumps and bumps.

I decided I was going to put her down on a Tuesday and on Monday I went to touch her and she "hissed" at me and I was like "okay, sorry"... I went to the bathroom and my daughter knocked on the door and said Kiara just died....

I said "no, she didn't she just hissed at me"... and I went into the bedroom where she lay and picked her up and she let out one more gasp...

I really think she waited for me to hold her one more time before she let go.

I still have my boys from her though (and I for one am in serious tears)... they are getting older but geez they love me... Tigger is sitting in front of my pc now looking just as cute as can be.

I know losing a pet sucks but always remember the joy that they brought and you had a lot of years for her to love you and be loved

Best to you and all of the other pets you love,
    Kim

      Makes me feel so bad.

Although I remember having my cat sitting on my lap towards the end, I didn't do enough to say goodbye and my Dad put him down without telling me. : (

I should have paid attention to him “talking” instead of ignoring him.

no idea how old you are but if your cat was on your lap in the end he knew he was loved and if he had a life of love that's what matters. They do talk and it's so cool when someone realizes that.

My dog Dori literally expects things when we do certain things.. and whines like a baby. For example if I even think of putting on socks and shoes it means it's time for a walk in her mind... she follows me from one room to the other in expectation :p

Halcyon, you have obviously touched a lot of people here and only those who love their animals almost as much as their kids like Missterra, can possibly understand.

They become a part of our lives that some can't or won't understand. My mom always says get rid of some of your animals... HUH? that would be like say get rid of my kids or something.

The thing is you did have so many wonderful years and I know I am scared since my babies are getting older but I will never forget the licks of love I have gotten, the moments of laughter.. or the fact that they just love me more than anything and have never known a life without love.

I am sooooo sorry. Animals are close to us in ways other humans can never be. We know when we first meet them there will be a time we have to say goodbye. Knowing doesn't make that time any easier. We can only be consoled that we will see them again on the other side. They are patient and will wait for us.

There is another precious little soul that needs your love and care. I hope you can put the loss into perspective and give another kid a chance for a life of security and love. It's all we have on this planet and in this life. Make it count.
