Had a tough evening last night at the cage fights.

My son-in-law up was up against my son's best buddy since kindergarten and my son his coach to boot!

I was in the bleachers cheering for both at the same time and got a lot of strange looks, lol!

My son-in-law won, but I just don't get the whole want to fight thing.

Anyway, my son-in-law's coach taped the fight but at times was more into coaching than filming.

It's common for me to be in touch with fighters with a few of the businesses I run.

I think that if people who fight could see in hindsight the potential damage it can cause they probably wouldn't do it. One hard knock to the head for instance, and you can be riddled with a constellation of eye floaters for the rest of your life. There are many threads across MMA boards detailing such things. Of course, there's risks to weightlifting and the likes too...

A lot of guys of known eventually tend to simmer down when the testosterone does and they focus their efforts into other things.

      Thanks Daniel!

Yeah, actually my biggest concern is that I don't want my grandkids to have a dad who is a little off in the head due to too many blows to his noggin.

And have you seen what they call cauliflower ear? That's just ugly!

Anyway, I hope he outgrows the need or whatever to fight quickly!

I don't see the appeal of the violence either Terra, how can we say violence is bad on one hand yet raise a generation watching it being both condoned and applauded?

People claim they don't understand why kids bully?
It's taught to them every day in their own living room and all the dads that watch that crap are as fault as anyone else.

      I hear you Kim!

This all started with the boys wrestling around in the yard for years when they were younger.

We never watched fights at home at all, I can't speak for my son-in-law though.

When my son wanted to get involved with cage fighting, his dad told him, Not as long as you're on my insurance you're not!

So he's now a coach. haha!

Anyway, last night was the first time I went to watch and the last I might add!

Years ago I worked with a guy who was professional bull rider. I had actually known him since he was 16 but got to know him a lot more when he came to work for the same company I worked at.

He had used steroids to grow massive muscles and turned into one bad hombre.

I went over to his house once and he had two roommates who had litterally destroyed their bodies riding bulls. As I watched these 20 somethings hoble around the house with their broken skeletons barely being able to support their bodies it made me wonder if they ever regetted doing that much damage so early on.

        Youth. What a concept...

          Yep!

And I'll bet they regret it more and more as they get even older.

    Terra,
Of course we did a lot of wrestling, and maybe I have what your son and son in law are doing mixed up with something else. When I hear cage fighting I automatically think MMA.
Is what they are doing different?

What they do is UFC, except on the amateur level.

The cage fighting they do is a combination of wrestling, boxing, kick boxing, and martial arts.

I do know that my son-in-law was in karate and wrestling when he was in school.

Anyway, they train at the gym for it where there are several teams.

Testosterone and thousands upon thousands upon thousands of years of evolution. Both sexes evolved needing to deal with the physical rigors of certain tasks. You ladies have to deal with the extremely dangerous and difficult task of child birth and us men have had to deal with the rigors of physical combat with other men, as well as surviving hunting encounters with the occasional pissed off wooly mammoth.

Just as that maternal instinct tuns strong in you, the propensity for violence runs strong in many males. Think back to the schoolyard. It was usually the boys who resorted to fisticuffs. It is part of our make up, in general.

Haha! I can say with the utmost confidence that I never dreamed that childbearing would ever be a part of this thread, lol!

But thanks on your take, it does make some sense.

Yeah, I hate seeing the violence and it hurts to think how much punishment they take and the permanent damage it could cause . . . but for some reason, I find it appealing to watch! You pick a favourite and start pulling for them and before you know it, you're shouting out tactics to help "your guy" do something to really hurt the other guy!

    Barbaric. But strangely appealing.

I love watching cage fights. There's actually a lot of strategy and technique to these fights. People think that it's all just brute force, but for a fighter to progress very far in this sport, he must have knowledge in not only boxing, but also some form of martial arts and wrestling.

Unlike boxing, where the one that gets beat to a pulp is usually the one that loses, in a cage fight, a guy can get beat to a pulp and then catch his opponent in a last minute arm bar or some other hold to win the match. The more I watch it, the more I want to watch.

It would be nice though to have more protective gear, like some head gear to prevent that nasty cauliflower ear or brain damage. I also think that the actual fighters need a much bigger cut of the pie to take care of them later when these injuries will catch up with them.

That's exactly how my son-in-law won the fight in the video. He got his opponent in an arm lock, and then the opponent tapped out.

And yes Gary, a lot of strategy is needed. Those boys spend a lot of time at the gym with their teams training.

Well maybe not recently. But before Dana White became involved with the marketing - the caged fights were banned in a lot of arenas because people were marketing them wrong. In the beginning they were marketed as "having no rules". There were even Senators here in the United States that wanted it banned all together because they didn't understand it. Senator McCain even called it human Cock Fighting.

The marketing is much better now. Plus there are several commentators out there now that do a great job of explaining the strategy during the fights.
