I know what you mean. He seemed to age so slowly. I expected him to go 100+ years. Although that stroke seemed to slow him down a little.

He was America's oldest teenager. So sad, thanks for the memories Dick.

Really...I never expected that one either...there was talk he had made a deal with you-know-who, and there was a painting in his attic that got older...

I remember the start of, I think "In Living Color" where a grizzly old man (I'm talking 'Little Big Man' old) walks into a room, and a mass of makeup people go to work on him franticly...

A few minutes later...a page pops his head in the door, and says: 3 minutes til air-time, Sir! -

The mass of people step back from the chair...and Dick Clark emerges - I liked the way he poked fun at his perennial teen-age...

He took it all in stride - until his recent stroke and recovery.

He really is someone who can be called one of the last of the Television Legends -
Very few working TV folks from that 50's era now - Betty White, Carl Reiner, Mel Brooks, and a few others still plugging along -

I liked Dick Clark - I gave him a 78 because he was easy to dance to...

(but you left us Ryan Seacrest...why, Dick, why??)

He will never be Dick Clark - You were the 'stereo-typical' prototype. They will always be just copies.

        RIP Dick Clark -

    RIP Dick Clark (omigod)!

I am sorry to laugh at a time like this but I see both Thom and Jody mirroring my exact thoughts:

He never aged! He never changed! Now he died? How can this ever be?

    totally disoriented.

    He lived a good long life - 82 - "the world's oldest teenager" eight-two-teen

Wow - so many memories swirling around Dick Clark.

    Godspeed!

      "eighty-two teen"

I remember watching American Bandstandin black-and-white.
Then, years later, having thought it had long gone by the wayside,
discovering it was still going strong. Only now in color.
All the kids would line up to review the songs and they all said the same thing: "I liked it. It's got a good beat. It's easy to dance to". :p

      Dick will be the MC:

My TV musical schooling was via American Bandstand, Shindig and Where the Action Is.

    American bandstand:
American Bandstand is an American music-performance show that aired in various versions from 1952 to 1989 and was hosted from 1956 until its final season by Dick Clark, who also served as producer. The show featured teenagers dancing to Top 40 music introduced by Clark; at least one popular musical act—over the decades, running the gamut from Jerry Lee Lewis to Run DMC—would usually appear in person to lip-sync one of their latest singles. Freddy "Boom Boom" Cannon holds the record for most appearances at 110.

The show's popularity helped Dick Clark become an American media mogul and inspired similar long-running music programs, such as Soul Train and Top of the Pops. Clark eventually assumed ownership of the program through his Dick Clark Productions company.

    Shindig:

    Where The Action Is:
Freddie is one of the great characters of rock 'n' roll. He has the distinction of having appeared on American Bandstand more than any other artist. Why? Because Dick Clark owned his record company.

Here's a memory of the Dick Clark show in 1957 from former AL Senator Bobby Denton. (Who happens to be recording again, in his "retirement)

I do indeed.... sadly I can't find a single clip on Youtube for that show though.
They always had the Hullabaloo dancers dancing away to every artist.

wow, you found a clip, awesome. And yes, they had different bands every week. Shows like Where The Action Is had both guest artists/bands and a house band, which for that show was Paul Revere and The Raiders.

True - but it wasn't 9 minutes of Kinks hits from the early 60's!
