And would you believe I'm serious? They wanted a thousand for their campus and decided to design them. Here's what they came up with.

Google rolls out a new design for its campus bike | Internet & Media - CNET News

It must have the positives that they wanted, but it isn't something most experienced bicyclists would want.

Maybe I'll wait for the Yahoo or the Microsoft versions.

Looks like they just painted an old style bike, I don't get it.

Haha you're absolutely right @ThomM, it's an old style bike painted, I imagine a flying bike or something like that

I agree Thom, it looks like an ordinarly girls bike (as it was called when I was a kid) with a basket and an ugly paint job. I"m with you, Lloyd, I'll wait.

  • These must be the POS bikes they built at the GSA "conference" for 75K (?)...a drunk dad on Christmas eve could put together a bike like that...

"created by a team of Google engineers, from among nearly three dozen submissions in a company-wide design competition." (and this is the best they came up with???)
I've met them lots of times...internet engineers who got no street sense  I hope the 'team' didn't have to put in too many hours...

Good thing they stay on campus - you'd get tired going to the Sports Page and back - :p

Heck - at least it's not like the one the team at Zappos built*

Reminds me of an old saying, bike a mile in my shoes or something like that. The shoe size needs adjusting.

I can see the point of the Google bikes. They wanted the same one for everyone. There are 2 more farther down the page and they also have the step through frame. (Women's bikes as they are usually called here.)

Maybe they are just using that type of frame as a unisex model. It's much more common in Oriental countries to see men on that type of bike. The point is just to get somewhere, but we tend to get caught up in appearances and what everyone is thinking. (me too)

The bikes are simple, with a coaster brake at the back, and a rim brake at the front. They are just to get around the campus, so no need for distance and performance. Just a small inventory of parts will keep them running. They are meant to be ridden by anyone, and just left around the campus.

I've had a few problems with Google programs that still aren't solved. Some of the things they do don't work nearly as well as the search or the mail. I've been in one of their support forums daily for a week trying to get one thing working, and the even the forum doesn't work well. It's worse than this one, not a shining example at all.

The bikes look decent compared to some parts of their other programs.

But, like you say, any old beach cruiser with a basket will do that -
As for the 'step-thru' / women's bike...even as a small boy, and after I understood the reason the women's bike was the way it was...it seemed silly to me back then that it wasn't the other way around...why did men get a top bar? It seemed like we had more to worry about than getting our skirts in a bunch! ouch!

As someone as a kid who had a wet sneaker slip off the pedal while standing up peddling, I know real well what that center bar was really for.

I don't understand the big deal about the bike either. I agree it looks just like a girls bike from the 60s.

Seems to me they could have just bought 5x as many bikes from Craiglist for half the price and had a variety of different bikes for a variety of different sized people.

Take a look at a the snow version - doesn't that look like fun?

The new google bike looked better to me - high handlebars and 24" wheels plus that honkin' big basket.

LOL! That's funny - a Cop on an Electric Trikke! I'm sure every PD is just running out to buy those! :p

As for a Trikke on skis - I thought it was an off season trainer...I used to have one, but I never really got the hang of it...

As for those "cycle skates" - how did you stop on those things?

I can't believe they want 1000 bikes! Is that just for the Mt. View Campus???

That's a lot of bikes lying around...how many people work there now?
