I thought the term "mayday" was derived from this incident that happened on May Day 1960 but according to Wikipedia...

Mayday is an emergency procedure word used internationally as a distress signal in voice procedure radio communications.

It derives from the French venez m'aider, meaning "come help me"

The 8-hour day movement which directly gave birth to May Day,...

... must, however, be traced to the general movement initiated in the United States in 1884.

But...

In 1886 the U.S. Congress passed legislation to make the first Monday in September a national holiday and our official Labor Day.
