Just had this phone call from a supposedly "Microsoft Technician"

The phone call went like :

Phone rings :

Me : Hello
Him : Hello sir,
Me: Hello again
Him : My names "james" and how are you today?
Me : I'm good thanks, hows you?
Him: Good thank you, I'm just ringing on behalf of your computer, I'm a certified microsoft technician, working for microsoft. We've recently been notified that your computer is running slow, and we are able to help you, with your problem.
Me: Hold on! has my computer told you it was running slow?
Him : Yes we received notification that your computer was running slow.
Me: Oh really, i don't own a windows computer.

A few seconds go by with a silent pause. Then beep! he hangs up!

is this a well known Scam? Anyone had this type of phone call before?

The person sounded for a third world country with his very poor english and accent.

Shame i didn't get the phone number to report it as they phoned up using a blocked number.

This is the first time i've had a phone call like this before.

I feel for all those that are going to fall for this type of scam, i assume they would prey on the ones that are not very good on computers.

Anyone fallen for this type of scam?

It's a scam and if I remember I traced the phone call to a company in California of all places - here's how it works:

They call you telling you your computer has a virus and they ask you to open up a virtual window to them which allows them access to your computer they then send a virus to your computer through this connection.

    - As this is happening they then tell you you have said virus and ask for money to get it removed by using their own 'antivirus'.

    - Once this has been done they con you into very expensive monthly payments to keep their virus at bay - sick isn't it.

    - But here's the best one - an indian called me up from I assume the same Company and when I asked him where he was from - this is great - he said:

"Well sir I am calling from the World Wide Web, you know - the people who control the internet!" At which point I said - "Oh Deary Me!"

Yes it is a scam. Been around for a year or so.

Microsoft will not call anyone at home.

The calls are from India. They just call every number going via an autodialler.

So where I live it will be 01189 000001, 000002 etc up to 999999

BT are trying to work out how to block incoming calls from abroad (you can block ingress from a number) but thing is they would immediately change the number they are dialling from.

You will get this call maybe once a month now because their comuter will record it as a real number that was answered.
