Story highlights...

Record:

In 2011, the Fortune 500 generated a combined $824.5 billion in earnings -- an all-time record, and...

... a 16 percent jump from the previous year.

The previous record:

The previous record of $785 billion was set in 2006, amid robust economic growth and before the subprime mortgage crisis in the housing market touched off global financial turmoil.

After that tailspin in late 2008, companies slashed costs, particularly labor.

If it is a 16% increase over the previous year, then they made LESS! Inflation is higher than that! HECK! I am spending about as much for hotels, but more for everything else. Of course, I AM generally getting a negotiated rate. One time a hotel even slipped up and gave me the WHOLESALE hotwire rate! I LOVE(sarc) how some can take a BAD thing, like inflation, and use it to make them seem to have a point.

SUPPOSE that standard oil, of 1911, saw how much the TINY companies today make compared to them. HECK, Mars probably makes more money than they did. BUT, add in inflation, and is it REALLY so much more? NO WAY! They made MORE than mars could ever expect to make and probably even more than EXXON(one of those little babies). If you had $7, would it buy as much gas today as it would have 4 years ago?
