Partridge Family ( though there were really only two family members in it, David and Shirley) or the Osmond family which was a real really big family? Seesm to be a family theme, how about adding another?
    The Cowsills

As to your question, neither, they came out when I was at an age that they were considered bubble gum music and not for a "hip" teenager like I was at the time.

LOL, you are definitely correct there, they were the girl's heartthobs. But I just remembered one more, what about this guy?

He wasn't well-known over here, just one minor hit. I don't recall any other individual male singers causing as much hysteria as the two Ds either. David Essex was quite nice to look at though!

    • The fact that David Cassidy was a tortured rock and roller trapped inside a teen idol, made him much edgier in a subliminal way...he desperately wanted to be someone else in his shoes, and that gave him an edge -

Whereas, Donnie had the edge of a butter-knife...

In their respective dressing rooms, David drank Jack Daniels and studied Hendrix. Donnie drank Dr. Pepper and studied Pat Boone...

Dr. Pepper. Nasty stuff. Drink it and you'll end up on Broadway or something.

I was definitely in love with David, had posters of him on all my walls, lol

Anyone remember that Rick Springfield was also a heartthrob and not for "Jesse's Girl", he had a hit called "Speak to the Sky".

DUDE! Dr Pepper is THE thing to drink. But the crap they call Dr Pepper nowadays isn't the real stuff. It has to be made with real sugaer. Luckily you can still get it that way on rare occasions.

IMHO the Osmonds could have rivaled the J5 but ( for whatever the reasons) they didn't come close to producing the dozens of hits like those of the Jacksons.

BTW, I'll take Donny over David cause one bad apple...

The question was David or Donny.

If I had to listen to one of them perform, I'd choose Donnie just because of the song "One Bad Apple".

I hope that clears things up for you.

My 'bad' on the apple... I'd never heard of the song that I could recall. I just googled it to listen to, and it still didn't shake the tree - I don't think I've ever heard it before just now...

Hence my being confused to the core...

Boy, could I run with this thread. I just don't have that kind of time. And I
wouldn't even know where to begin.

First off, Donny and David weren't the rivals. Donnie and Michael were. Many
people said that the Osmonds were just a Jackson 5 wannabe.

The Partridge Family had no rivals. They were in a class by themselves. The
Cowsills (the closest competitor) were dead after 1969s "Hair" and "We Can Fly".

The Partridge Family reign pretty much ended in 1972 with their last top 40
single, "Looking Through The Eyes Of Love."

The Osmonds had a few hits between 1971 and 1974 but they never really came close to the success of their first single "One Bad Apple" which was one of the top songs of 1971.

Of course the Jackson 5 went on to become legends.

Donny Osmond did make a comeback in 1988 with "Soldier Of Love" that
peaked at # 2 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was so totally different from his
      earlier image.

During all this time, there was a group called The Defranco Family which was kind of an Osmonds wannabe. Funny, trying to be a wannabe of a 2nd rate group to the Jackson 5.

They had a few decent hits between 1973 and 1974 with "Heartbeat It's A
Lovebeat", "Abra-Ca-Dabra" and "Save The Last Dance For Me."

They were okay, but I could take 'em or leave 'em.

By the mid 70s, the teen idol craze was ending. We had disco, The Hustle and
"Love Will Keep Us Together" by Captain and Tennille, two songs that
practically defined the era in pop music.

By this time, even The Jackson 5 were all but gone, their last BIG hit being in
      1973 with "Dancing Machine".

However, little did anybody realize that Michael himself would have his best
years (1982 - 1992, Thriller, Bad, Dangerous) ahead of him.

I lived through it all, as well as many years before this all began.

Which is why, to this day, I still miss The Cowsills.

Because they had them all beat in my book.

Personally...I loved Bobby Sherman. Was he the most talented? Heck no. I didn't care....I just thought he was cute. Broke my heart when they cancelled "Here Comes the Brides" lol

If it's David or Donny I'd have to go with Donny for one song, one that everyone else I knew hated.

As for David Essex, this was number 1 in Canada and a top 5 in the US.
