Stupid Windows Security issue.. can you help

Okay guys this is one of those little things that has driven me nuts for about a week. I vaguely remember running "some" Vista tool to "optimize" my laptop. Well it was late and I was apparently bored.

Now I keep getting the freaking icon "Windows Security Alert". I click the icon and it takes me to the Windows Security Center and it shows that it is turned off.

I click the button to turn it on only to get a message saying the Security Center service can't be started.

I have driven myself nuts over this.

Anyone got any idea how to make this problem go away.. short of buying a Mac. :-)

Wish I could help but even though I'm certified and have a degree is computer science,I have stayed away from Vista and hopefully will manage to until Windows 7 comes out, but I can think of a couple of other Warriors here who will probably see this thread and be able to help you.

I sure as heck hope so! Whatever setting I changed is making my head hurt! :-) I want to say I did an optimize which turned some things off... and of course I should not have done it.

Some days I think my license to operate a laptop should be revoked.

I had one serious problem that was solved by Avast. After you
download and install it, you have the option of doing a boot scan.
Avast will stop the restart before anything else is moving and
scan the whole computer quickly. It found 2 files that it wanted
to eliminate and that sounded good to me. When I googled their
names after the restart I found stories of people whose puters
were trash after the wound up with these installed.

Any time there is any possibility that I am having a malware
problem, my plan is to uninstall Avast, download it again so I can
get that "boot scan" done again.

I did mention to them on a feedback form that it would be nice if
that scan could be done on demand, but unfortunately there
wasn't a way I could find to do that.

    best wishes, lloyd

This is a fake security alert. These are common nowadays. A free program called Mal-Ware bytes should remove it for you. Just do a google search for Malware Bytes and download it then install it and update it. Then run it and remove everything it finds. I had this issue last month. Let me know how it turns out.

It is not a security warning I am getting. It jsut shows when I go to my windows security center that it is off. When I try to turn it on it says it can not be started.

I also did the Mal-Ware bytes download and ran it. It did find a few things that Avast and Windows Defender had missed... but I still can't turn on my security center.

I am going to un-install Avast and try the other option to see if a bootscan helps. As soon as that is complete I will come back in here and let you guys know if I am still having issues or if they are fixed.

      Thanks again...

    Jamie,

Is it Windows XP or Vista. My old day job was a Desktop Technician. I might be able to provide more help.

Vista... As I had said, if I go to the Security Center it shows that it is turned off. I click to turn it on and I get a message that says Windows Security Center can't be started.

Hope that gives you enough to help. This is making my head hurt LOL.

    Just get a Mac.

    Don't kill me :-)

I switched three months ago after 11 years on Microsoft junk. Barring a few somewhat trouble free years on Windows 2000, the rest have verged on passable to hellish.

I had so many problems with Vista that got me so annoyed so I switched to a MacBook and I love it! I have had it about 5 months now and its never locked up on me and it starts up in 5 seconds and shuts down even faster. My printer, portable hard drive and camera are compatable I use my old Win XP laptop for a few programs I can't run on my Mac, but for everthing else I use my Mac. My Vista laptop has been sitting unused all this time, its worthless in my opinion, even with 4 GIGS of ram, its too slow..... That's my rant for today.

You are having a problem with a service, not a program. Most of the newest incarnations of viruses attack specific things in the o.s., such as killing the security service (thats how it would be seen).

run malware bytes, or windows defender. If that doesnt fix it, you can try to run the windows repair console.

If that still doesnt fix it, i would suggest backing up your data and prepare for a reinstallation.

It seems you installed some Firewall software and it messed with internal Windows Security settings.

Better backup and format your PC.
