Chinese conglomerate Dalian Wanda Group agreed to buy AMC Entertainment for $2.6 billion, including debt, making it the biggest theater operator in the United States.

Market Day - China's Wanda buying US cinema chain AMC for $2.6 billion

Why waste time? Just go straight to bootleg! :p

Being in a movie theater offers an ambiance and setting that really can't be recreated at home. Not unless you have a home with an actual movie theater in it and lots of people to invite (That would be kind of pointless, sort of reinventing the wheel. Even so, that's what one of my brothers has).

When I lived in China, I saw lots of "fuzzy" movies. In some of them, shadowy heads occasionally got in the way of the film. There were lots of little enterprises that offered them. The quality of such product would certainly be much better now.

I actually love going to see a movie at the theater and absolutely LOVE it when myself or myself and my wife are the only ones in the place.

We recently went to see the Denzel Washington movie Safe House and when we went in to watch it, we were the only ones in the place.
    "Awesome" we thought.
Five minutes into the film a lone woman came in and sat down,
Five minutes after her entering till the end of the film she talked over the movie to herself!

Having a movie ruined like that is why I very very rarely will pay the outrageous prices they charge to see a movie. That and the $15 for a small drink and a small bag of popcorn.

  • I was just joking about the bootlegs...I love going to a theater too (in most cases, when there are very few people that can ruin it, and you get good seats) I like going into the great old refurbished theaters too - like The Stanford in Palo Alto - They play classics, and sometimes even crank up the Wurlitzer

(I even ran into Shirley Temple (Black) a few doors down from the Stanford one day...that was kind of an 'out of body' experience! )

But I found it ironic that a Chinese company would now control something they have been blamed for undermining in the past...we'll have to wait and see what happens

About all it means is that the theatre industry employees will be working in sweat shop conditions while even more of our GNP will be bleeding out to another country.
