Michigan Lawmakers Propose Social Media Privacy Act

Michigan doesn't always make the news for positive things, but I was elated to hear of this proposed bill.

Social Media Privacy Act

Employers would be banned from requesting an employee or job applicant to disclose user names, passwords or other information that would give them access to a social networking account. Educational institutions would face a similar ban related to students and prospective students.

Employers could not discipline employees or fail to hire applicants for failing to disclose access information. Schools, universities and other educational institutions similarly could not discipline or fail to admit students for not providing access information.
I know we were discussing this topic earlier this year and was wondering if you knew of any other states that have passed such a bill, or have one on the table.

    What's disheartening is that so few people are willing or able to tell a company requesting or requiring that information to blow it out their *$$

      I hear that Steve.
      I've had an issue with drug testing since that started.
      It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see it targets cannabis users and no one else, not to mention they are an invasion of privacy. Plus the tests aren't 100% accurate. I've turned down a few well paying jobs and put myself in financial trouble because I refuse to be tested.
      I'd do the same with this social media crap.

    Terra -- YAY -- now that is the MI I remember and grew up in. All you are missing now is thousands of people sitting on the lawn in Lansing and you'd have 1972 all over again.

    I've also told corporations to blow it out their a$$es when they expect something that I feel is an intrusion. And I have paid for it with genuine hunger and risk of homelessness at times. I still can't get over the company that wanted the right to search my car and "person" (which they could give no details just what the f*** constituted searching a "person" ) -not just in circumstances that theft was supspected - but "random" searches - just any time they felt like it. I told them where to get off on my way out the door. The owner was surprised and said I was the first to object. I told him "then I was the first worth actually having here, fascist dickhead".

    I also refuse to fly and at this point in time am considering never using a major highway to travel ever again also:

    To my knowledge OH doesn't have anything like that in the works but OH hasn't pushed hard for any regulations regarding the internet. Yet.

    More people need to get off their butts, turn off the TV and pay attention to what's happening. In this let it all hang out culture, so many are growing up without regard for personal privacy.

    In fact, the desire to maintain privacy is being vilified. Like if you don't tell me all of your business then you must be hiding something. So intrusions are overlooked for fear of making waves.

    Sadly I think it will get worse before it gets better. I believe that people will fight for their privacy only after they experience the weight its total lost.

    But I'm glad at least one state is making an attempt.
