Sprint is testing us. Virgin Mobile, Sprint's prepaid division, just launched a test of the way Americans buy phones--and it could have tremendous implications for the wireless market.

We've had that option here for years, but most people still choose the "free" phone.

Sprint doesn't offer free phones anymore. They still claim they do,but instead they charge a $35 activation fee, when before the phone and activation really was free,if you extended your contract for an additional two years.....

This type of offers are also available in UK countries by so many popular network provider companies, but that is down to the market here.

So what's the difference if you charge the phone upfront and take the $30/45 monthly fee with Virgin vs Sprint? That would be my marketing to Americans... giving them perceived lower monthly costs, even if the interest charges made up or ate up all the savings. If monthly charges are what drives their purchases, that's the marketing I'd pursue.

As a consumer? I don't want to pay the big up front either, but if I had the extra cash, I'd definitely buy in to save the huge amount over those two years.
