(*here's a twist in the 'tidbits' - Freddy Mercury used the same piano to record "Bohemian Rhapsody" - that Paul used to record "Let it Be")
  • Hard to pick a "favorite" - but I might as well kick it off...

Wow - I saw this and thought - Paul Myers isn't that old yet is he?

Glad to see one of the group still thriving. He hasn't aged that badly.

Actually, both living Beatles are still quite active, Ringo still tours with his ALL-Star Band that has various members joining him on stage.

As far as Baby I'm Amazed, that was on the first McCartney album,Wings wasn't formed yet,and Paul played all the instruments himself, with some vocal help from Linda, though I am sure they played it quite often and I can't tell if it is or isn't with them.

They were just here at Bethel Woods (Woodstock) on Saturday (The Beach Boys were there on Sunday).

      Couldn't get tickets

        Happy Birthday Paul.

According to my parents, the first song I ever sang was a Beatles tune.

        This one, lol!

That's funny! For my nephew it was "Hey Jude"...all he could do at first was the "na na na na..." - then he went around going "Hey Dude"

Paul has always been pretty good at 'banging out a ballad'...here's another one

Wow. Well I love every Beatle's song so I can't say there is one favorite I could post for this auspicious occasion. But one of my favorite songs of all time is 'Band on the Run' -

    Happy Birthday Paul!

I'm not sure I entirely agree with that. Wings didn't define a genre of music. Had the Beatles just been Paul McCartney (even though he was and still is my favorite of them all) they wouldn't have been the Beatles.

That group was greater than the sum of its parts. It was a phenomenon that we will never see again, not in our lifetime and not in any lifetime.

Wings WAS Paul McCartney. And nothing against Denny Lane or Linda, God rest her soul, but they weren't Paul McCartney. None of them were. So to say that Wings was the group the Beatles "could" have been is laughable.

John Lennon, in his own way, was equally as talented as Paul.

George may have been one of the most underrated songwriters and guitarists of all time.

Ringo played the part he was supposed to play perfectly. Their choice to have HIM sing "With A Little Help From My Friends" was pure genius as nobody would have made that song what it was like HE did.

In short, the Beatles were magic.

Wings was just a very good band.

One other thing just to clarify. What AP really meant was that had the Beatles stayed together they would have gone on to be Wings and maybe better. I don't agree. At some point in time, a group as an entity just runs out of ideas, burns out or simply can't work together anymore.

Look at other big name groups through the ages. Many fizzled out after 4 or 5 years. Those that went on longer, in most cases, didn't live up to their early works. I'm sorry, I know there are a lot of Rolling Stones fans here but there later years were horrible.

The Beatles could work together anymore. By Abby Road, they were recording everything separately. In short...they would have killed each other.

The Beatles were the Beatles and while they were together, they were one of a kind. I'm actually glad they broke up when they did. They wouldn't have been the same group.

Wings, on the other hand, was Wings and they were good.

          But they were no Beatles.

I'd have to agree on that...Denny and the rest of the band always knew from the start Paul was the front-man...there was never any argument who people were coming to see - they were just happy to be along for the ride...it's still that way today - if he wanted to, Paul could be like Chuck Berry, and just show up expecting to be supplied a great backup band pre-loaded with tunes - sure he's got a reputation for being a taskmaster and a businessman, but he's also a hell of a musician...who wouldn't want to play with him? Almost everybody famous who he counts as friends has...he's (Sir :p) Paul McCartney for cryin' out loud...it's not that he needs to play to live...he lives to play.

Whereas Ringo being a drummer is smart by having a band of All-Star(r)s...They work as a cohesive unit of named talented artists who are all draws themselves - like the Traveling Wilbury's...(not to imply George was not a major draw by himself...he was)

(and I'm also not implying Ringo couldn't draw a crowd - he can...he just works much better this way peace&love)

Alan Partridge is a comedian, so the comment was undoubtedly tongue in cheek.

The real reason (apart from an impressive catalogue of songs) behind the Beatles enduring legacy is they were the first.

There was nothing like them before they came along. That's why the bands since then have never reached that level because it had already been done. By The Beatles.

Sorry Steven I was just being a bit mischievous with my post! A bit unfair as probably only British people know who Alan Partridge is. Alan Partridge is indeed a British comedian, here's the clip anyway!
